1986 85hp force. all three carbs flood like crazy. will faulty fuel pump diaphragm cause this? it acts like it has too much fuel pressure. is there a regulator for the fuel, besides the floats?

Re: flooding

Sounds to me like dirty or worn needle and seat valves in the carbs. I'd get 3 kits from NAPA and rebuild the carbs. Wouldn't hurt to get a fuel pump kit too. Ask to see their marine catalog.

Re: flooding

I have the same motor and it used to flood all the time. In fact, it took me being towed back in 4 times until I figured out how to start it! I'm slow, but can be taught! :D Does the motor run ok when it runs normally? Are you able to start it when it is flooded? If not, read on...

It may not be the same problem as yours, but mine seemed to flood every time I changed the fuel tank, or started it warm with the choke. If you can't get it started when it is flooded, try turning it over with the throttle wide open. I have to remove the cowling and manually hold the carb open while my wife starts it. It only takes a second, and I immediately let go of the throttle. Everything worked fine after that. Good Luck!

Re: flooding

The problem is I have never had the motor running right, but I am pretty sure the carbs are ok. I think it is the fuel pump diaphragm. I have found it is very easy to flood by choking it. I am pretty close to giving up on this motor. The sad part is I have two of these motors and they both have good compression. As a matter of fact one of them was just rebuilt, new pistons and rings. I have owned mercs and evinrudes and never ran in to such a querky motor until this force came along.
