Re: floor glassing question

Are you sure... The last line (Purple)talks about the tabbing and the paragraph talks about using the Arauco Exterior grade plywood instead of the Marine Grade.

Decks - Marine Plywood IS the best and the most expensive. A very good alternative is the new Arauco Plywood is Really Good stuff. I recommend it now for Deck, Stringers and Transoms unless you want to pay the extra. My opinion is if the glass layup is done correctly and Proper care and maintenance is done the Arauco will last many decades.

Which part? the last line in purple at the top of the picture talks about the 6" tabbing and the Paragraph Talks about the Arauco Plywood which is just Ext. Grade Plywood and NOT Marine Grade.

ya it says tabbing, but it does not tell what tabbing is but you explained it above so thank you :) so will any hardner / resin work for this?

I recommend Polyester resin but you can use Epoxy if you want to go to the extra expense.

Look at uscomposites. Are you sure you have done stringers before? Walmart isn't gonna have what is needed. Again, strongly suggest core sampling stringers down low near the stern. Black spots mean problems too.

Re: floor glassing question

what is PB & PL? i know its for bedding stringers, i also read you can bed them with 3M 5200 ? even though mine are adequate for the time we will keep the boat I am thinking of just doing them to do them anyways. but i have to keep it affordable or it will never get done, i am on a very tight budget right now :blue:

Re: floor glassing question

what is PL? i have read 2 sets of direction on the site for the underside of the deck, wet it out with resin, and also to use matt before its put down. so naturally i need to ask, which one is the right way lol

also no place local has or even heard of cabosil, so what else can i use or do to thicken the resin or make PB ?

Re: floor glassing question

PB (peanut butter) is a term used here for putty, it describes the consistency needed for it to be easy to work with.

PL is a construction adhesive purchased at big box stores, sort of like 5200.

Cabosil and Aerosil, are both brand names for the silica used to thicken resin and to make putty. If the locations you shop don’t know what they are, shop elsewhere.

As for the underside of the plywood floor.
It should have a layer of CSM applied to it, resin alone is somewhat weak and brittle and will crack rather easily when stressed. With epoxy you can get away with no glass, not so with polyester.

Re: floor glassing question

A boat shop told me to pour my foam before tabbing the deck to the hull, I assume this is wrong?

Re: floor glassing question

It can be done either way. You need to be careful if doing it after the floor is in place because as the foam expands it can push the floor up and either deform or break it. It also rarely fills the space as fully as people think. It can also expand at different rates depending on temperature and humidity

Doing it prior to putting the floor in allows you to fill as needed and then shave down any high spots, but by doing it this way it doesn't bond to the bottom side of the floor, which may or may not be important.

Re: floor glassing question

well if thats ok then it seems like getting the PB to not fall down in the 1/4 gap would be easier then because foam will be under it, kinda liking that idea, plus the support under the deck while doing the glass work would be nice!

Re: floor glassing question

When new they don't typically bed the stringers in anything, nor to they fill the gap around the floor, these spots are just glassed over. It is better to bed them though.

Re: floor glassing question

The pb falling into the crack wasn't an issue for me, and my gap was much wider than necessary in places. You can mix the pb awfully thick, and it won't sag or run. Glob it in place, shape to a fillet with a large spoon, then clean up the edges with a putty knife. This worked well for me and gave a nice, attractive, easy to glass over cove.

I'm sure if you left the deck gap, foamed, then filleted and glassed, the foam will ooze through the deck gap, and you would have to trim it and clean that up. I'm sure it would work fine though.

Re: floor glassing question

It can go either way, but mat works fine if you don't require more strength.

Re: floor glassing question

so, after finding a few more bad spots i thought were still hard, I got pissed last night when changing a few side to side stringer braces and I cut out all the stringers

WTF was I thinking  I am just kidding, it seems overwhelming BUT actually there's only one way to do it, balls out not picking away at it just GO AT IT FULL BORE NONSTOP! So I ground down the glass, made new plywood stringers out of 1" Arauco plywood, i could only go as far as the bulkhead/console the rest is hidden and not accessible so i had to stitch them, meaning put the new ones up to and 2' past/next to the front of the old ones where they got cut off so they are essentially "one" piece still, clamped them together with 3M 5200, bedded them with 5200, then glassed them in and now i have new damn stringers, OH FREAKIN JOY  ... getting ready to go pick up a few more sheets for the deck, while thats curing I'll be getting a undercoat of glass on my new deck and cutting plugs out for the foam pour, Id like to have the deck in and screwed down tonight and be pouring foam but im sure itll be too cool by then for foam, i dont want 16 cu.ft. becoming 8 cu. ft. so, if it is I might just start fileting the deck edges so i can start tabbing the deck.

its amazing what you get done when you pissed off .... ok off to get more decking I go before they close ....

should have posted 2 nights ago...
