why???????????????? the absolute only reason I could think of to use peanut styrofoam would be that you have a ton of it and you need to get rid of it.... all things being theoretical until and EVENT happens... what happens when you puncture your hull in a catastrophic manner and your now ripped bag and loose flotation , floats out the hole in the hull?? unless you are destitute....just try and stay with industry accepted practices.... seems like the more continuity you have with your flotation foam, the better off you are.......the pour in stuff in practice would be the best IF it didn't absorb water over time....other wise large pieces of the blue or pink dock foam is the best....it may take some shaping to fit the best but it is ridged and it works and doesn't absorb water!! bob

Yep, it's not a good choice:

In hindsight, the peanuts would have 'just barely' kept the big pressure treated box platform they were inside afloat.. Barely, and probably not at all after all that truck bedliner got sprayed all over everything :facepalm:

BTW: Some packing peanuts are now made of a water soluble styro, w/ a starch based substitute

Lots of peanut info.

BTW, part duex: often used in Hydroponic applications for their ability to absorb & hold water

Dave: I'd suggest you either restore the original post you redacted (it could be a resource for someone that follows us to iboats) or ask a MOD to delete this thread.

Your original question may have been met w/ less then favorable replies, but for good or bad, threads are a reference & resource. This thread now merely suggests what you asked, but who's to say someone else won't have a similar thought process or access to copious volumes of peanuts & little or no other use for them.

Clearly, a previous owner of my 1st SC Jet thought that they'd be a good substitute for flotation foam.

Thanks DJ. Lived the disgusting mess those peanuts let form below decks. Black mold isn't even close......

One of those Flotation similar threads I reposted has a link to a VERY interesting read about packing peanuts

Those results were NOT remotely similar to what I found w/ the packing peanuts below deck...

Does anyone know if the foam in these boats under the floor will actually keep the boat afloat? Or does it just make the boat sink slower.
I took out some of my foam and put a in floor fish box in.
The next starcraft I rebuild will probably have below floor fuel tanks and a fish box.

Lund is pretty proud of the flotation they use (currently):

Nobody has done (& posted) a sink or float test of the 'new & improved' flotation methods found on iboats: noodles, sealed bottles, insulation sheets or of the typical pour-in foam used by many manufacturers.

Jigngrub has threatened to do so, but as of now, he has not, yet.....

I am doubtful that what is found below decks (even when 100% dry & never waterlogged) on some builds would ever have been sufficient to keep the boat afloat in a swamping. But since the early 1970's the USCG has been randomly swamping boats & testing the OEM flotation. If there's a list of failures, I've never seen it......

As backyard boat builder's, we are not held to the same standard, but I have time & money invested, why would I skip the flotation?

I'll end w/ I'd rather have as much foam as I can reasonably get onboard all of my boats, where ever I can get it, rather then merely some or none.....

Sinking slower is certainly better then like an unattached outboard :watermelon:

I didn't reply expecting an apology, but thank you.

IMHO, by putting your thoughts, questions & concerns on-line, you're not just helping yourself, you're helping others. Sometimes what not to do is equally as helpful as what to & how to do stuff best.

The Starmada can be harsh at times, but are an extremely helpful & well informed (@tin boat building anyway ) bunch.

Just don't start a thread, make multiple posts w/ questions & don't post up any pix at all thru the 1st few pages....

Torches will be lit, a cantankerous angry mob may gather at your gate. :facepalm:
