I bought a new Lowrance X18c GPS/Fishfinder for my center console boat and have been looking at installation alternatives.

There is a nice flat space on the right side of the console opposite side of all guages where I believe it will work well and keep things from looking cluttered. The 45 degree angle will be nice for viewing and the clean flush profile will keep it out of the way of other things I may decide to add down the road. However, my one concern is that this will be a relatively permanent installation and therefore may be vulnerable to theft if the boat is slipped in a marina overnight. The other is that this will require cutting a hole about 8X10 inches which may result in additional modification if I should ever decide to replace the current fishfinder with another.

I'm hoping to get some helpful input which may influence my decision to do a flush mount or the conventional mount on top of the console.

Keivn
<><

Re: Flush Mount GPS

my $.02 is that it would be more difficult to remove (to a thief) flush mounted rather than bracket.

while i don't make a habit of tempting fate, the times i've left my boat unattended i haven't had a problem. this is either using the cockpit cover or not. in fact its rare to see any folks removing their electronics at any of the marinas i've been in!

I agree with John that most do not remove Electronics. However as you move up to a larger Color unit it becomes a bigger target. Also I belive the unit will last much longer if you take it inside where temperature is more constant. I remove all my Electronics at the end of the day.

Re: Flush Mount GPS

Thanks for the input guys,

I think it will end up being a flush mount. I will probably be using a console cover to keep the guages from inclement weather exposure and also keep the honest people honest.

I will plan to make a nice clean cut and save the panel I cut out. Then use magnets or velcro to attach it back on top of my flush mount electronics so things are not so noticable.

The boat is actually sitting in the dealer showroom over the winter so I plan to be making a few trips to take measurements for all my rigging ideas.

Kevin
