Ayuh,.... You need a new Ring Gear,.. Not a complete flywheel....
Go to Napa,... It should be maybe $50....

Re: Flywheel....... i think?????

i just read an older post from 2007 and read all about the ring gear, so that is what i am going to get. while pulling the starter, i broke off the small post that had a small yellow wire, and the shaft was loose like the berings were worn out, so my question is should i or can i get the starter rebuilt or is it to far gone?

Re: Flywheel....... i think?????

when you pull it out, the driveshaft comes out with the drive? is there anything the motor needs to come out of like in a car where it comes out of the transmisson?

If you would like some help with your problem i dont mind you using this thread, any imput or similar problems could help. most people dont like imposing on there thread though just so you know.

Actually I have the same problem plus a little more. That is how I found this thread. I started a different thread though, sorry to impose...

Hold on, your assuming way to much. As my grand dad told me, "If you cross a bridge before you come to it, you have to cross it twice". ;)

that is a good quote...i might have to add to my bag

Man it looks like we have identical problems. I pulled my 4.3L Mercruiser out and it comes out way easier than a car. Just make sure you get all the lines and hoses disconnected. When you put the motor back in you should use the alignment tool that lines up the motor and the gimble bearing. I just put a new ring gear on, and she is going back in!

Good luck!

Re: Flywheel....... i think?????

ok, iam pulling the motor tomorrow, and i went and got he ring gear today, and he guy at napa told me i needed to have the flywheel balanced once i got the new gear on, is this true? i thought all 350 balance was in the harmonic balancer, but please let me know if i do ned it though, i plan on pulling the motor, putting the gear on and putting the motor back in same day.

Re: Flywheel....... i think?????

When I did my 5.0, 2 years ago, I took the flywheel to a machine shop and had ring gear put on plus they resurfaced the fly wheel. All together, ring gear plus machine work was less than $80.

First time I pulled my motor it only took 2 hours to pull and bout the same to install.... I've had to pull it a few times now and can now pull it and have it sitting on the ground in 45 mins.

One thing to watch not to do, is not bump or move or adjust the bottom nuts on the front engine mounts. That is your engine alignment.

One trick I've learned when re-installing is use electrical tape to hold teh rear engine mount nuts to the bottom of the engine mount when re-installing the engine.

Good luck!

thanks, i pulled the motor today, while removing the rear mounts, the sleve for the bushings in the bellhousing, seized to the bolts resulting in the rubber getting tore in half. so i went today and bought a new bellhousing with the bushing already installed. changed the ring gear, and got everything ready to go in the morning to reinstall. thanks for all the help, hopefully it is not to bad to realign.

I used a regular engine hoist. Took 2 days to take out, repair (new ring gear from NAPA $37.50, block repair $180.00, new starter drive gear $ 39.95) and re-install motor. Turned out to be much easier than I thought, and way easier to do than most of the land boats I have done!

Sorry for the late reply. Hopefully instead of reading this you are at the lake!

Take care,
Brian.

Curious about why you had the flywheel resurfaced?

well just got the boat back home, we reinstalled the motor, did the alignment, and now all i have left is hook up a few lines, few electrical connections, power steering lines, and then put new starter, and outdrive back on and crank her up. the wife is making me go to a birthday party this afternoon and i will get it all back together tonight, and hopefully be on the james river tomorrow. thanks for all the good advice and help

After getting screwed on flea-bay I had no choice but to rent one at a local shop. Glad I did! Even though I never touched the transom mouunts I had to realign!

Re: Flywheel....... i think?????

got the motor in and aligned, everything went together perfectly, except alittle trouble with the drive, but got it back in. i put the new starter on, tried starting turned over a couple turn then grinded. charged the batteries, same thing. took the starter back and got my old on rebuilt, brought home and put on, turned the motor over a few times and then just stopped like it locked up. hit the key, just a click. so i figured it was to tight and pulled to put shims in it and noticed my 6 day old ring gear on the flywheel is toast, about 10 teeth missing. so someone please tell me what i am doing wrong. i am getting tired of pulling the motor for a $22 part.

Was everything tight (starter bolts torqued to 50fp as well as electrical connections tight) before you pulled the starter off? With the starter off you can turn the engine over by hand right? If not you got something in her and she is locked up.... With missing teeth you know it has to be replaced again. bummer.

OK so change the ring gear and before you put it back in the boat leave the engine on a stand and/or a hoist and leave the flywheel hsng and flywheel cover off, bolt up the starter and engage ONLY the solenoid (B+ to the solenoid lead only, not the motor) check the clearance on the ring gear. Don't worry, the drive gear from the starter will not spin (unless you power up the motor windings) and the gear should mesh with the ring gear. You may have to turn the engine a little by hand when doing this so the gears can mesh. Shim it only if needed (if it is hitting the ring gear and not clearing the teeth- make sense?). You can buy an assortment of starter shims at parts stores.
If it looks ok, then apply power to the starter and the solenoid (with the engine on a hoist and or a stand- something to hold it while you crank it) (also pull all the spark plugs so as to reduce the workload on the starter) and it should crank it fine. If everything is good, put the plugs in so you are cranking against compression resistance. If all is good, then put the covers on and put her back in.

Also to consider is slave solenoids. Do you have a slave solenoid as well as a starter solenoid? Sometimes they can cause a V drop and the result is a poorly engaging starter...

FYI- I am not making stuff up here or guessing, I did the above to my 4.3L Mercruiser just last week after replacing my ring gear and welding my block..

Let me know if you need more "help". Good luck!

Re: Flywheel....... i think?????

i dont think i have a slave, but that is what i planned on doing so i could see everything. the only reason i didnt do it last time was the starter was at the shop and didnt have it while the motor was out. how do you make the gear come out and not spin? all i have is 2 posts on the starter one big and one small. which one do i put the power on???
