Re: Flywheel....... i think?????
got the motor in and aligned, everything went together perfectly, except alittle trouble with the drive, but got it back in. i put the new starter on, tried starting turned over a couple turn then grinded. charged the batteries, same thing. took the starter back and got my old on rebuilt, brought home and put on, turned the motor over a few times and then just stopped like it locked up. hit the key, just a click. so i figured it was to tight and pulled to put shims in it and noticed my 6 day old ring gear on the flywheel is toast, about 10 teeth missing. so someone please tell me what i am doing wrong. i am getting tired of pulling the motor for a $22 part.
Was everything tight (starter bolts torqued to 50fp as well as electrical connections tight) before you pulled the starter off? With the starter off you can turn the engine over by hand right? If not you got something in her and she is locked up.... With missing teeth you know it has to be replaced again. bummer.
OK so change the ring gear and before you put it back in the boat leave the engine on a stand and/or a hoist and leave the flywheel hsng and flywheel cover off, bolt up the starter and engage ONLY the solenoid (B+ to the solenoid lead only, not the motor) check the clearance on the ring gear. Don't worry, the drive gear from the starter will not spin (unless you power up the motor windings) and the gear should mesh with the ring gear. You may have to turn the engine a little by hand when doing this so the gears can mesh. Shim it only if needed (if it is hitting the ring gear and not clearing the teeth- make sense?). You can buy an assortment of starter shims at parts stores.
If it looks ok, then apply power to the starter and the solenoid (with the engine on a hoist and or a stand- something to hold it while you crank it) (also pull all the spark plugs so as to reduce the workload on the starter) and it should crank it fine. If everything is good, put the plugs in so you are cranking against compression resistance. If all is good, then put the covers on and put her back in.
Also to consider is slave solenoids. Do you have a slave solenoid as well as a starter solenoid? Sometimes they can cause a V drop and the result is a poorly engaging starter...
FYI- I am not making stuff up here or guessing, I did the above to my 4.3L Mercruiser just last week after replacing my ring gear and welding my block..
Let me know if you need more "help". Good luck!
