flywheel/timing issue

Hey guys,
I've installed and gapped points on my MQ11 1965 seahorse. When I went to fine tune the points at the timing stage, i found that the flywheel would only turn about 1 revolution. At that point, I'd get the clicking sound you get when you open the throttle, and the flywheel just stops. I have the throttle at WOT(as instructed by the Clymer's manual) and the gearbox is in forward. Regardless of whether I have the motor in forward or nuetral, I get the same result. I do not have this problem with the flywheel off and using a wrench to turn the crankshaft. What the devil is going on?

If you don't have the problem with the flywheel off, then it is obvious that something is interfering with the flywheel. Take it off and examine your points and etc.

Does it make the noise if the throttle is at an idle?
You don't need the throttle advanced to set the points with a feeler guage.

Re: flywheel/timing issue

Did you have the coils off and not realign them properly?

It is possible the magnets in the flywheel are simply attracting the coil cores and flexing the breaker point plate.

Re: flywheel/timing issue

My bet is one or both of your coils is rubbing on the flywheel magnet (something's hitting the flywheel).. When you turn the flywheel clockwise, coil hits magnet and the armature plate coil is attached to turns clockwise.. and you hear that clicking sound your motor makes when the armature plate is pivoted. Reset coils properly and make sure all wires are tucked away. Also, check to see if you have any lateral movement in the armature plate.. that'll cause all kinds of issues. Post back if there's play there, and we'll help you fix it.

Good luck!

Re: flywheel/timing issue

There is no need to have the throttle open or to have the engine in gear when setting the points... I strongly suspect that you are misreading the manual. Set the points as follows, and also reset the coils as described below.

(Point Setting Of Magneto Models)
(J. Reeves)

Set the points as follows. Have the flywheel key aligned with the fiber rubbing portion of the ignition points. Adjust the gap so that a .020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not. Should there be any question of the points being dirty (touching the contact with your finger would cause them to be dirty), clean them with a small brush and acetone or lacquer thinner.

NOTE 1: Should the operating cam have a small portion on it with the word "SET" imprinted, align this portion with the fiber rubbing portion instead of the flywheel key.

NOTE 2: Should the cam have the word TOP embossed on the top of it, that is a cam that could be installed upside down and this is simply telling you which side is up. It is not a position where one would set the points.

(Magneto & Driver Coil Alignment)
(J. Reeves)

To align the coils properly, have the metal vertical portion of the coil yokes aligned with the inside edge of the bevel that exists on the top portion of the aluminum seat upon which the coils sit. This creates the proper distance between the coils and the flywheel magnets. Faulty alignment creates friction and the yokes of the coils heat up, turn blue and expand.
