Most winterization instructions say to bring the engine to medium idle and spray fogging oil down the carburetor until it stalls. I did this, but it took me about 10 seconds and what seemed like half the can to stall the engine.

1. Is this normal?

2. If not, what did I do wrong?

3. Can you use too much fogging oil?

Re: Fogging Oil

just my personal experience but I have a couple of 460's that can be stubborn when it comes to stalling with the fogging oil. I have found that I need to use 2 cans at the same time with no straws attached to get sufficient spray down both barrels to do the job. I spray some some alternating until I see the white smoke coming out the exhaust and then give her both cans full blast, it works.

Re: Fogging Oil

i just have one old IL6. but i had the same trouble. couldn't kill it with the foggin oil. i got me a new can of foggin oil and mentioned that i was havein that trouble to my dealer. his answer was. oh, we just fill up a cup with it (foggin oil) and slowly dump it in faster and faster till its foggin, then stalls. that worked....

Mine won't quit either (350)...It starts to stumble though, which means theres some oil getting th the walls, and thats all that really counts

Re: Fogging Oil

I think this falls under the "for added protection" part of winterizing and when it's smoking and sputtering, that's always been good enough for me. I have skipped the fogging a few times and the engine is still going strong 20 years later with no work done on it.
