Hello.
I just got bayliner 1700 ls 1996 with force 120 hp OB on it. It wont shift in reverse rattles like crazy and prop is not turning. Forward and neutral works fine. Linkage cable is fine and where it needs to be. How would I remove lower unit and what jaw does it have 3 or 6? Thanks
Serial oe179093 on 1996 bayliner 1700 ls

does anyone have reverse gear or lower unit for sale? Manual?

Your linkage may be one spline out of adjustment. However, before dropping the lower unit, be certain the brass or black plastic plug that adjusts the length of the shift cable is adjusted correctly. Mark its current position then move it to bias more toward reverse.

If this does not work: Return the plug to its original position. The shift shaft in the lower unit detents at forward, neutral, and reverse. disconnect the shift cable and see if you can manually push the slide through all three positions and get reverse. If not: Put the engine in neutral. Then drop the lower unit. Grab the shift shaft gently with a padded pliers so as to not **** up the splines. Rotate it through forward , neutral, and reverse to see where the detents are. then return to the center detent (neutral). Be certain the engine linkage is still in the neutral position (with the cable attached). Reinstall the lower unit and see if it now shifts correctly.

You do not need a puller to remove the lower unit--just an open end and box end wrench of the correct nut size. I forget, but there may be a hidden bolt under a plastic plug in the rear. It is a straightforward job to drop the lower unit.

Thanks alot I will try dropping lu and see whats going on. I am hopping that shift shaft is more toward forward gear and needs little Adjustment. Is it possible that someone before I bought it did not center shift shaft right and its more toward forward gear?

Thanks again

http:// www.boats . net /parts/search/Merc/Force/1996/H120412SD/parts.html Again remove the spaces.
Parts list,See #37 That's the shift rod cover.2 screws and it comes out.
Try taking it out there.
If not then the driveshaft/pinion nut comes out and the forward gear gets taken out.
I don't have a lot of experience with the 95-99 drives?

Is that 1 of the followers ball in the 2nd pic? I can tell by looking at the tip that it's worn down pretty good. Looks like that's what caused your shift cam to break.I would go ahead a get a new follower kit also. Also check the dog clutch for cracks.

I am planing of taking lower unit down again to see why is it not engaging fully in reverse can someone point out bad spots ? on this pics why it wont go in reverse fully? please. adjusting linkage cable didn't help i moved it from end to end and no luck.THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.

update: lower unit taken a part and same damage done cam is broken and thats why its not engaging. why would it brake cam twice same problem i had before? If pics would help i can upload them for someone to see whats going on. thanks
