Force 125 Flushing?

I am now the proud owner of 2 1989 125 Force OBs. They look like they have been to Hell and back! But before I bought the boat online I watched a video and they ran good. I need to discover what I have and plan on a compression test.

But I want to run the engines in my yard- what is the best OB flusher to use on these 125s? Round or rectangle muffs? Or double water flow style? And, does one fit muffs from the prop side?

I also have a trim/tilt problem on one. Resevior is low and in a recent winter freeze I discovered oil that must have leaked from the system somehow? I do not recall seeing that leak after trying to tilt motor. I only discovered the leak after a few hours of opening the resevior fill nut in cold weather. The 2 shop books I bought say different things. One says to fill with 10-40 wt motor oil, the other says 30 wt. So which oil should I use? Once full I can then try/test system and look for leaks.

Thanks for all help.

... two of them huh? well least you know you have spare parts :)

i'd skip the muffs an opt for a galvanized tank from home depot. bout 50 bucks. if you do go with muffs make sure they cover the intake grates on your lower unit and crank up the hose.

i have run 30 wt in the t&t and heard that recommended from others.

have fun

What a neat idea. How long can you flush by using that tank?

I have the 5 dollar pair of sea choice round muffs. You have to bend them a little wider to fit around the 125hp lower unit, but they work just fine. Key thing is, make sure when you first start her up she is pumping. Sometimes you have to move the muffs around to make sure water is hitting the "g" spot of the intake, other than that any pair will work fine. That being said, bin is nice and much quieter to run because the exhaust snout is submerged. Both get the job done.

They are force therefore I would try to find a suitable sized toilet and flush them both there.

... nothing like coming to the Force forum and bashing  the US Marine made Force is a pretty kewl outboard to work on, has a good sounding roar when running near wot.

The tub can run an o/b for quite sometime. i've had the water for about a week at a time when doing some maintenance.

May the Force be with you :p

Re: Force 125 Flushing?

i have well water, so my water pressure is unreliable, and the muffs are a poor fit, I have had the fitting blow off /out of the muff, just dont like em, so I use a
landscapers barrel, its deep, the whole lower end fit in and with a hose running in it, to cool the water because it will heat up.

Re: Force 125 Flushing?

I use both muffs and a barrel depending on what I am doing with the engine. The best muffs to use are the large round ones with the strong spring arm. They will cover your intake holes well and hold tight. The intake area is relatively small so the round muffs work fine. The important part is the strong spring to hold it against the water pressure.

Re: Force 125 Flushing?

I went and bought a oblong tub and fill it with water after lowering my lower unit in it. I started the engine and after a couple of minutes and the CLEARING of the SMOKE,,,,,,,,I notice the water was NASTY. Full of Oily residue,,,,,,just nasty looking. Is this normal. I just got this 89 125 running after about 2 years of setting.

I hope that it's because of that. I will get a ticket for oiling up the water if it is not.

BOY That new water pump sure does work!

Re: Force 125 Flushing?

The water will get oily because the exhaust is coming out of the snout and it has unburned oil and combustion by products in it. I usually pump my tub out with a sump pump and use it to water the shrubs. They are all thriving so I guess it can't be all bad.

All 2 strokes of that type and age will really skum up a tub even a little 5 hp.
Just be sure it is properly tuned and carbs adjusted carefully.I believe there may be puddle valves that may need servicing as well.

What are puddle valves?

I noticed also,,,,,,the two times I have started this motor,,,that if you push the key in,,,(to operate the choke),,,,,,,gas will run out of the carbs and it will flood very easy. Somestimes it Back Fires too!

Re: Force 125 Flushing?

If the carbs have not been taken apart and cleaned or rebuilt, I would say it is time. Backfiring through the carb is a sign of a lean mixture. Your vent and port holes could be gummed up and your float can be sticking.

I better let someone else do this for me. I'm not much on Carbs. I can pretty much do other stuff but I have not had much experince with Carbs. Thanks for the info.

well I have been called a forcephobic.

......well ignorance can be bliss.;) I bought an original 90/90hp a couple of seasons ago and have it out approximately on about 65-70 outings. It has never failed to start, has never let us down and has always ran very well.
Merc did an excellent job (coupled with the deficient L-drive) of thoroughly painting this budget outboard with the darkest brush and apparently is still carries. This sort of reminds me of people still believing that (unjustly) all cars built by the big 3 are junk in comparison to their Euro/Japanese counterparts...which of course is not true. However the after taste of the 70's/80's/early 90's quality is continuing to haunt them.
Fortunately there are some excellent people (Frank, Roscoe, RR, etc) within the Force forum who are very knowledgeable and....helpful, at helping the rest of us keep these simple, unsophisticated and inexpensive motors on the water.
All Good:)
