:confused:I am having troubles with my 89 bayliner capri Chrysler 3 cyl L drive motor. I am not getting spark on the top or bottom cylinder. Middle cylinder seems fine, i can switch the wires coming out of the cd box from the middle to either top or bottom cylider coil and both plugs will spark(one at a time only). So my question is what do you think the problem is? Stator? Cd boxes? Anyone know how to test either the stator or cd box. Any and all help appreciated. Also has anyone else had this problem.

My second question is what kind of a top speed can i expect out of the boat? It is new to me and after i get it running i will find out but am curious now. Thanks again

That motor is either an 85 or 90hp so from a performance standpoint you will probably get something around 35+mph out of the boat if the motor is in good condition, not too much more. Have you done a compression test on the motor yet?
This is very important before you start to invest money in other repair requirements particularly with the infamous L-drives.:)
Get a buddy to give you a hand and do a compression test (wet/dry) and post the results. Some of the other Forum members will probably have some good feedback on your possible electrical/spark issues.

Check all wiring including grounds, make sure there tight, check
any plug in connections on the wiring and make sure there crimped on good at the plugins.
You have ground straps on the L-Drive lower unit, may want to check those too just to make sure there grounded good!

Swap coil number two with coil number one, see if one fires, if it does the coil on one is bad, swap coil two with coil three, if three now fires the coil on three is bad.

It is possible that each CD module could have a bad half.
On the CD module for cylinder three, swap your wiring on the unused side of the CD module to clyinder three and see if you have fire on three now, if so half of the CD module was bad.

Take pictures of the wiring and have a manual with wiring diagrams handy while doing this!
Good Luck!
