I sheared flywheel key on river had broken magnets and locked up broke starter shaft clean in two. I have since replaced flywheel, starter, cleaned carb good, replaced reeds because i had one broken probably from it misfiring. I have everything back together and boat very hard to start i have to crank on it forever and if i get lucky it will start :grumpy: I have checked stator resistance it checked good and i have spark on all three cylinders and its getting fuel. Positive and negative battery terminals getting very hot and the starter (brand new) but dont know if its bad connection or bad wire or me having to crank the crap out of it trying to get it started. My compression numbers were 120 on all 3 cylinders in case anybody asks the numbers. Im going through the cables now to rule them out and will get back with my results. Im wondering if i could still have a timing issue or maybe the solenoid or bad trigger which could have cause the misfire to begin with but i dont have a timing light to check it but flywheel was at 0 mark when i put new one on.When it cranks it will crank slow (new battery) then fast not normal before the breakdown it used to just crank hard and fast.Any help would be appreciated even though the river is too high the lakes around here are good to go and my wife is aggrevating me lol

When you do a lot of fixing at once the odds get better that you will make and error or an oversight. Simple as it may sound, I suspect your battery and/or the cables that supply current to the starter. All that heat suggests resistance or weak battery. Load test your battery and clean all connections in the cables.

Yea the cable ends are looking a little rusty so I'm going to change those out and see if it helps. Battery is brand new cranking battery just bought last week.

Re: force 96 75hp wont start

A "NEW" starter can be bad right out of the box.
I replaced a starter on my port motor.
It would crank real slow and after it warmed it would get better.
I though the guy(me) who rebuilt it screwed up.
I got out my replacement and was gonna change it.
Started to loosen the lead from the solenoid.
It was finger tight.Tightened it and problem went away!!!
Even the so called experts can screwup:)
So check all connections and check the battery leads. The motor turning can cause weak spots in line??

replaced wires and cleaned connections and still wont start. Im gonna check the voltage at the solenoid even though the starter is engaging the flywheel and turning it. The starter is staying engaged at the flywheel but still is turning it over. Im at a loss i even sprayed a mix of oil and gas and still wont hit. Spark and fuel and compression good and wont start has me confused (which is not hard to do).

Disconnected kill switch black/yellow wire above rectifier and still had spark? What does that mean? Boats cranking good and has spark but can't start it.

You sure the flywheel was installed correct?
I found this by accident,Try tilting the motor as you turn it over.
I was having trouble with the floats sticking,I accidently had the motor tilted up and turned it over.
It started in the tilted position.
I lowered it and it started right up.

I have been wondering if I did something wrong when I installed the flywheel. It's not my first time doing it but still had me wondering. I actually did get the motor to start and run yesterday (didn't do anything special it just hit and ran) but now I have to replace impeller wasn't pumping water.

Re: force 96 75hp wont start

Changed impeller and when i did i broke the lower shift rod at the coupling nut :mad-new: This boat has been in salt water before i bought it and everytime i try to do something to it something breaks. I even took my time and was working it slow just because i knew there was a chance and i still broke it. Checked on a new one and for a piece of rod 24" long is at least $250. Either going used or maybe get this one machined and hope i still have enough room for it to shift properly. Wondering if anyone has had this problem before and if they tried anything else other than replace it

Re: force 96 75hp wont start

I hope you have fixed your motor. I have a 97 force 75hp that I bought used from someone. Not sure how throttle and shifter cables hook up. Prev owner had them hooked up what appears to be backwards. Just wondering if you could take a picture of your cable setup. I sure would appreciate it. I do have a suggestion for your problem. Make absolutely sure the key is lined up on flywheel. I had broken the key once on installation. If the key is broken you will never get motor to crank.

Re: force 96 75hp wont start

no. i need a picture of the throttle cable and the shift cable where it hooks up to the motor. The guy I bought it from swears that one cable comes around from the right side around the back of the motor then hooks up. I have never seen anything like it. Took it to dealer he said he had it rigged but couldn't tell me the correct way. The other cable comes in on the left side like it should. My clymer manual isnt ant help. If I could just get a picture.
