I purchased a stator for a 1988 force 85hp outboard a couple of weeks ago.<br />After I installed the stator, the crank timeing came to TDC, where it should have been 28degrees. The timeing was so far off that I had to disconnect the timeing linkage rod to get to 28 degrees. The engine then cranked and ran smoothly. I can't simply install a longer linkage rod because at full throttle the rod would be way too long. I could not install the stator any other way, because the wires on one side would be too short to reach the terminals. The stator sent to me did not look exactly the same as the old one. Does the position of the stator dictate the timing? Should I splice the two wires that would be too short, and rotate the stator a quarter turn? Or should I send it back?
