force stator/timing relationship

I purchased a stator for a 1988 force 85hp outboard a couple of weeks ago.
After I installed the stator, the crank timeing came to TDC, where it should have been 28degrees. The timeing was so far off that I had to disconnect the timeing linkage rod to get to 28 degrees. The engine then cranked and ran smoothly. I can't simply install a longer linkage rod because at full throttle the rod would be way too long. I could not install the stator any other way, because the wires on one side would be too short to reach the terminals. The stator sent to me did not look exactly the same as the old one. Does the position of the stator dictate the timing? Should I splice the two wires that would be too short, and rotate the stator a quarter turn? Or should I send it back?

Bill
Sounds like you got the wrong stator. I would send it back, rather than splice it together. It would probably work fine if you did it right, but hey, you paid for a New stator and you might as well get the right one. Not to mention what a repair shop would say if you had to take it in. They would probably try and make you replace it anyway. Do you have a number on the new stator?

Re: force stator/timing relationship

ON MY 1988, 85 H.P.I HAD TO REMOVE FLYWHEEL TO REPAIR MAGNETIC RING FOR STATOR AND AS FAR AS I COULD SEE STATOR DOES NOT AFFECT TIMING. TIMING WORKS FROM TRIGGER WHICH HAS A SEPARATE ACTUATOR CLOSER TO HUB ON UNDERSIDE OF FLYWHEEL. I WOULD CHECK KEY ON FLYWHEEL AND CHECK TO SEE IF TRIGGER ACTUATOR CAME LOOSE. THIS IS ON A PRESTOLITE IGNITION.
JACK

Re: force stator/timing relationship

i had this problem on my l drive. i had to splice the wires and has been running fine for the last 50 hours. the stator doesnt dictate timine as mentioned above just the trigger. i had to splice almost all the wires i had but 1. and that was to the rectifier. if it runs smooth just rotate the stator. if ur timing is that far off look at the flywheel as mentioned above.
