There are two holes cut into the top cap. You need a spanner to unscrew it. You can--if you are careful-- use a small pipe wrench on the cap flange but it WILL mark it and dent it big time and it will look crappy. Most of the ones I have opened have been very tight and corroded some. Very difficult to remove even though it is a relatively straightforward job.

Apply a little heat around the top of the housing to soften the locktite on the threads.

cheap spanners made from stampoed sheet metal usually don't work well in this application. they flex and wallow out the holes. the best wrench is an armstrong adjustable face pin spanner. i think the pin size is 3/16"? you can use the butt end of a drill bit to find hole size and take it with you to the nearest sears. sears used to stock the armstrong in their stores. if you are patient you can buy same tool off internet for 1/3 price.

take out top thru-bolt and swing the ram forward. using a plumbers heat-shield to prtect transom and engine - heat with propane just enough to soften rubber. wearing gloves or other protection against burns, loosen the cap while rubber is still soft.
