It also has no exciter wire....and they haven't answered on a price. So what's the deal on the exciter wire...an alt without one is no good for me or what
A 1 wire can likely be used as well, though don't know your wiring specifics. @Scott Danforth , I assume the older wiring has all the helm power through the ammeter, which can't handle the increased current? I don't have a schematic...

yes.

the wiring is only 8 or 10 gauge. putting a bigger alternator on and keeping the ammeter wiring means the wires and the gauge turn into a toaster element and burn up

I had my alternator tested and it was no good...they installed an internal regulator so it self excites. I went out to boat this morning and the alternator is warm with out anything being used. Not sure why

that is the problem with single wire alternators. turn the battery off with the battery switch
