Re: Forum hostility

A great deal of this "hostility" would go away if everyone would simply switch from: "You're wrong!" to "I disagree and here's why..."

NOW you sound like my WIFE!!!:eek::redface:;) I had to laugh and share that one with my wife. Although I don't say that here I use that a lot in real life(usually with her) and it really gets her PO'ed
Its not the words but the tone and sometimes its hard to convey tone in writing.

I'm telling you all, it's all part of the Starcraft owners plot to dominate the world! :)

In all seriousness, it's funny to be corrected by new members who state "they don't know anything about boats but..." and they only have ten posts or less.

Before DaNinja jumps in to say that it should be "ten posts or FEWER" , I'd like to ask, what's a Starcraft?

Re: Forum hostility

One of the best things about this forum is the tone in which many of the regulars respond when answering questions. (Maybe a little exasperation here and there, but overall a great bunch of seriously helpful guys.) There are two other forums which I no longer visit due to the consistently rude and insulting responses I've noticed when looking over the various posts. (Maybe one reason new members to the iboats forum might make inappropriate posts is because they've observed this type conduct on one of these other forums.)

I'm glad that type of bilge water doesn't float around here. We've got a great bunch of contributors and moderators. If we ever loose them, this forum will suffer catastrophically.

Please do explain why I must use a pronoun rather then using two regular nouns seperated by a conjunction in my vocabulary on a boating website. ;)

Actually, it would have been better to use a prepositional introductory modifier.

I would have said "fewer than ten posts" or "less than ten posts"

No hostility intended:) I'm lucky if I spell three words correctly some nights!

Re: Forum hostility

As of a few minutes ago, we have a great example of why those who can't keep the politics and arguments out of the discussions, hurt the greater body of iboats forum members. We had a pretty decent thread going on about impacts of the spill on members, but it has disappeared. I have no doubt that this was done by a Mod and given a few statements made by one member, I have less doubt as to why it was done. I also fully support the decision, simply because I understand the potential ramifications. I will not elaborate further, because that is up to the site owner to discuss, or not, as he chooses.

You know, I sometimes like a good political debate too, but the forum owner has stated that they are not allowed here. In as much as I am a guest on iboats little slice of the web, I honor that rule as best I can.

I hope others will too.

My dad used to always say that to me. I just looked it up right now. I don't say it exactly the same but Voltaire is the one that came up with it according to the net.

I have to say that "common sense" is one of my criteria for hiring people.

Whether you get banned or not, is entirely up to you. The rules of this forum are posted and they are clear. No one says you can't have an opinion and no one says you can't present facts, as long as they are reasonably well researched and likely to be true.

Really, its a matter of self control. If you stay away from politics, religion and libelous statements, you are probably going to be OK. Its also a matter of alllowing yourself to be monitored. As I mentioned previously, I made a post the other night, that was pretty stong. I had a day on the water before that, looking for oil and didn't find any. That was great, because I really expected to find some. After that, I found out something that really burned me and I was sitting at my desk, trying to relax and calm down. Unfortunately, I came in here and the keys just started clicking. Every word of what I wrote was true, and frankly, was stuff that needs to be said, but it would not have been helpful in this context.

That post never made it to the forum - why I don't know, but it probably was "poofed." If so, I am fine with that, because really all that would have happened is a friend saying, "jay, take a breath, come back when you are over it." In general life we do that for one another every day and I accept it here.

This can be a fun place, or it can be a place that you used to go - its up to you.

That said, I hope you'll do the things that will make you a valued member of the iboats forums.
