Re: Forum hostility

Really, its a matter of self control. If you stay away from politics, religion and libelous statements, you are probably going to be OK. Its also a matter of alllowing yourself to be monitored. As I mentioned previously, I made a post the other night, that was pretty stong. I had a day on the water before that, looking for oil and didn't find any. That was great, because I really expected to find some. After that, I found out something that really burned me and I was sitting at my desk, trying to relax and calm down. Unfortunately, I came in here and the keys just started clicking. Every word of what I wrote was true, and frankly, was stuff that needs to be said, but it would not have been helpful in this context.

That post never made it to the forum - why I don't know, but it probably was "poofed." If so, I am fine with that, because really all that would have happened is a friend saying, "jay, take a breath, come back when you are over it." In general life we do that for one another every day and I accept it here.

This can be a fun place, or it can be a place that you used to go - its up to you.

Well said Jay.

Having been on my first forum ever for almost a year it took awhile
and a few pm's from the mod squad to get it.

Not being a forum person, the posts on this thread are telling me
this forum is quite unique and special.

That said, we are all human and sometimes are emotions take over.
Not long ago I did exactly what Jay did only mine was posted.
I had been here long enough to know better but my emotions took
over. I had to ask a mod to delete it, and then I apologized to everyone.

I now understand the uniqueness of this place and if I want to hang
out here its "play by the rules". Not everyone will get this but
they can just go hang out where political rants are allowed.

It's so refreshing to see the positive comments in this thread. It certainly could have gone downhill real fast.

Thanks everyone for maintaining control and posting comments that remind all of us why we love it here so much. :)

Re: Forum Etiquette

What I think is interesting is that the people that think there is hostility in this forum are the very ones that get into a banter with someone with a different opinion and cry foul later...and they end up being the ones that were the most abusive in the argument!

I think its healthy to have a different opinion. If you can't handle someone disagreeing with you then don't get into or continue a discussion in the first place.

Things are mild in my opinion vs the way they once were.....And Amen to that! :D

Many members jumped ship when the hammer came down several years ago, only the dedicated ones have still stayed.

Use the report function if it goes against the rules that are set forth.

Once was a little rough and tumble......wasn't it? :D

The good ole oil company threads. There were a handful of guys that were always in there that you don't see anymore and one that I have seen recently everyonce and awhile.

Re: Forum hostility

A great deal of this "hostility" would go away if everyone would simply switch from: "You're wrong!" to "I disagree and here's why..."

I think many of the train wrecks happen when people respond to responders instead of the OP (original poster). I have answered many, many questions of someone's just to have then very next post say "You're wrong".

Posts like that are simply meant to muddy a thread for the sake of slinging mud and are all too common and largely forgiven, only to happen ad nauseum. There is never a beneficial outcome of disagreeing on a forum. If someone is reading your post, they will learn from what you present. Saying you disagree with some preceding post does nothing to teach someone how you do something and only delays them learning what you consider the "right way".

Easily forgotten (or never learned), the forum layout is a means for one person (the OP) to address many people. The train wrecks I have seen are, many times, directly caused by people ignoring the OP and "talking to other audience members". As netiquette goes, telling someone (the OP) to go away while you discuss someone else's response with them is rude and wouldn't be acceptable in a real forum, either.

Hmmmmmmmmm ... as some of you have seen, I do shoot models too. Sometimes they are even naked models. I certainly wouldn't post those photos here, but for $29.95, you can buy monthly access to "jay_merrill's house of neckid-idity!" ;)

Re: Forum Etiquette

I work at a medium sized engineering company and we have reviews of work we do daily. We have meetings where we have problems and there are usually many disagreements on the best way to solve a problem. It is up to the individual in the meeting to decide what information he/she pulls from the discussions. There is nothing bad about disagreeing and then pointing out your view of the problem. Its how problems get solved and its how people learn from each other. The managers at my compnay encourage this exchange of knowledge.

Posting on a forum is no different in my opinion. I agree that I personally have crossed the line a few times and gotten testy but all in all 99% of the time its just a good spread of info with various opinions getting shared.

Re: Forum hostility

Just my opinion but, I think this forum is one of the best moderated forums on the internet. I would not be here if it weren't. ;)

I agree with this.

I'm on some other forums that try to keep it clean, but the 'climate' has long been spoiled.

Haven't been on here much lately...life is busy.
