Re: Fresh meat...

Yes, sorry, you did miss the post's intention by quite a bit. I didn't state or infer anything about this being funny, and honestly my feelings are quite the contrary actually. I really sympathize with these kids (I was in their boots 30 yrs ago at the Academy) and treat them like my own ( sponsoring out of town kids at my home and mentoring struggling students in my spare time). They are experiencing the most intense stress (physically, emotionally, and psychologically) during their Academy Indoctrination that I hope they ever experience in their lives. About 25% of the 350 plebes will request to drop out in the next two weeks on average, and I actually think that number will be higher since the heat and humidity will be a big influence. On Friday, I witnessed 30+ kids drop from the conditions and dragged off the grinder for examination and hydration. To be completely clear, I posted this proudly to demonstrate their commitment and the rigors these kids endure to ultimately serve our Nation.

Ah yes the old parade square.
It was alway's never a good place to be on a hot day, guy's would pass out at attention and do the skull bounce or worse drop to their knee's with thier bayounets mounted and get it through the armpit OUCH.

Re: Fresh meat...

While the heat may be a factor, I've seen more people fall out simply because they lock their legs at attention. If you've never experienced it, give it a shot at home. Stand at attention and lock your legs back. Just make sure you won't hit your head on anything around you and make sure there's someone there to help.

Locking your legs will make you drop no matter what.

Any former Marines remember cardiac hill at Camp Pendleton. Being a former doc i have walked that hill. Seems they always picked days when the temps were in the 100s.

I will not lock my knees, sir!
I will not clench my fists, sir!
I will not focus my eyes on the person in front of me, sir!

Squads echo those chants from Day One.

Did you notice the utility belts and canteens? New to help combat dehydration. Also permission to fall out to fill them at the numerous water stations will not be denied.

INDOC was eye-opening for me. I hated it when I was there, but appreciated it afterwards. Can't say I miss it :D
