I grew up fishing Carlyle Lake in Illinois.
Moved to San Diego in 1987 and fishing just isn't the same :( so not fishing for me.
However, I due pull the kids and guest on tubes.

We don't do much of the watersports with our boat. We do it very rarely, but most trips are with just the family which is just 3 of us. I imagine we will do more watersports when our son get's older, but for now it is mostly sitting at anchor relaxing with some cruising and high speed runs mixed in.

18' bowrider, we don't fish, wakeboard, or ski either.. I think I got my fill of all that when I was a kid. My wife and I have 2 girls, 4 and 10, they love to swim, occasionally I'll inflate the tube and pull them around. Primarily we use our boat to cruise and anchor or beach it and swim. The boat just gives us a way to get out and spend time together as a family at our own pace without being around crowds of others. We don't tote the kids around to various sports, go on extravagant vacations, eat out very often, or do any of the "normal" things that most families do, boating together is what all of us enjoy doing, for now at least. :) Most friends and coworkers think we're nuts that we can enjoy just being in the boat or sitting on a beach, they say they'd get bored after an hour of that. I say good, less people at the lakes for me to avoid. lol! Hell, I can de-stress just by going out to the garage and looking at the boat!

Brief video of 12 year old's first spin in a motor vehicle:

So YES - although we fish, tube and eventually will ski we have a boat load of fun without any of those activities!

Not a chance in hell I'd be satisfied on the water without being able to ski, tube, swim, or wet a line. I like the idea of a modern houseboat/30'+ cruiser, but it'd never be my only option. I will own a runabout no matter what, as watersports are my main reason for being at the lake. Carving that wall of water is relaxation!

I'm with you. A boat is a means to an end. Fior me it's transportation for me and my equipment (I go to an island a lot), hauling setting and pullnig crab traps, fishing, exploring, oystering, nature watching, getting to hunting grounds (often I put a canoe in my boat); I have done my share of skiinig, knee boarding abnd tubing on truck tires before the fancy ones (my children now ride on those). Wife and I go out to dinner and to friend's houses. As a teenager, I could "drive" 2 years before I had a license (including getting to the burger joint, a secluded cove, a friend's house, or that convenience store that didn't card you....) I can go cruising, too, without restriction, in my fishing boats, but it doesn't work the other way if all you can do on the boat is cruise.

That's why I can't stand, or understand, sofa boats. All you can do is ride around and look--like some old retired couple in the Lincoln town car heading out to see the Giant Ball of String. Just shoot me.

I can go fishing, too, without restriction, in my sofa boats (if I had any desire to do so), but it doesn't work the other way if all you can do on the boat is fish. No where comfortable in a fishing-type boat ( a center console especially - at least a dual console tries to provide some accomodations very similar to a sofa boat) for more than a couple of people to sit, no where to store the 12 - 15 life jackets, the tubes, kneeboards, skis, tables, etc. No where for the ladies to lay out and enjoy the sun like a nice sun deck and swim deck.

That's why I can't stand, or understand, fishing boats. All you can do is ride around and try to catch fish--like some old retired couple in the Ford Crown Vic heading out to the bingo hall hoping to bring something home.

LOL - Interesting to see the "live and let live" attitude along with the "my way or the highway" side by side. I'm the in first camp. I just love exploring and cruising, feeling the hull's interaction with the water, watching the spray, and listening to the motor purr. I also like giving my kid and his buddies their thrills dragging them around on tubes. And, although I never fish, I've found that a well thought out fish and ski boat like the Scout offers great fishing features that translate well to general enjoyment. No carpet to catch crumbs and sand, lots of storage, livewell that makes a really great cooler, and a minimum of fancy and fragile trim and accessories.

Re: Freshwater boaters who don't ski, wakeboard, or fish?

When I was in college(19-20), I had a late 80s ranger bass boat I took out. I've nevre fished a day in my life, nor do I have the patience.

However, if it floats and go down the lake. Pretty girls in bikinis are willing to go on it. Worked great for the girlfriend, and her female friends.

Same plan for the cobalt.

I have a wakeboard, and did when I was younger but was never very good. Same with skiing. I'd rather go cruise on the lake with some ladies, and do whatever they want vs wakeboard/ski.

Hey, one of my favorite things to do is show Baja drivers what the arse end of a vintage Checkmate looks like :D .

Besides that we fish, ski, tube, wakeboard, kneeboard, cruise around, and basically enjoy every single minute we're on the water and not at work.

Re: Freshwater boaters who don't ski, wakeboard, or fish?

I plan on doing lots of fishing when I get my boat fixed up- but as of now all I have is my canoe, and I am sick of just sitting there cooking in the sun and fishing. I can't wait to have the opportunity to get back out there on the boat and just be able to sit there and read a book or something. For me, the juice isn't in fishing or tubing or anything, it's in being one with what I have created and brought back to life, and being out on the water in it.

45, while what you say about fishing boats isn't factually correct, your comment about the crown vic and the bingo hall was a good one!

Thanks! While you obviously don't understand how to use a sofa boat correctly, the only reason I wrote it was because I was LMAO at your crack about the Lincoln town car and the big ball of string! ;)

Let me know if you're ever down in New Orleans, we'll take one of the sofa boats out looking for that big ball of string. You might even enjoy it!

Re: Freshwater boaters who don't ski, wakeboard, or fish?

I have some fishing gear on the boat but have never taken the boat out fishing. I have tube on the boat, and have towed one tuber in my year and a half of owning it.

Me and my friends do a lot more cruising, rafting or anchoring and swimming. As of this past weekend though, I now have two jet skis, and plan to drag those along with the cruiser. Get to the spot, and anchor, set up the grill, chairs and drinks, and then jump on the skis and mess around.
