Re: Steering...

How about a pic of this patent infringing hull.
Sure. I'll try to do that today.

There is no trim on that drive, it is tilt only.
What is the difference between tilt and trim?

Would like to see some pics of the flywheel cover and how they hooked that engine to that drive. Interesting to see if it is a viable replacement for the penta 4 cyls.
Someone suggested that the drive is not what is advertised. Something about 3 bolts and not two.

Re: Steering...

I have the same shifter as you, I just seen this thread I might of been able to help you when you needed it, but you figured it out. I have a 270 out drive and my lifter motor was broken so I took it apart, stole the old shaft from the broken motor and used a drill on the end to lower my leg works good. Those motors are really hard to find. Is your motor a 120 merc?
I have no real idea WHAT motor it is. I believe its a 2.5l but I would love it to be a 3.0l.

Re: Steering...

The tilt only feature is for trailering or running at idle speed only in shallow water. It's a electro mechanical screw jack tilt only and if you try to run under power without it down and locked certain destruction to some very expensive parts is sure to follow.

Don S states it is a 200 model penta, I don't believe the GM based 4 cyl was ever offered with that drive either. Wich is why I'm curious about your flywheel cover.

So I should consider installing trim tabs? What should I be looking for to know if they are needed? Also, you say "down and locked", how do I lock it? Should I put it down and forget about it? IOW, I can't rely on it in shallow water to move me even slowly? Thanks for the answers. While I have been on a number of larger commercial vessels, I am new to smaller craft and this is my very first boat.

I promise progress pictures today and will include the bell housing with both port and starboard views.

BTW, I am editing my Punch List as I go, adding what I have forgotten and indicating the portions I have completed. It's hot here in the Keys and I am working in direct sun. Taking an AC break is an essential habit. :D

Re: Steering...

If and I mean IF the lock mechanism is operating correctly, there should be a light at the helm that goes out when the vice rod is fully retracted (drive down and latched).

If you don't have the light, one is easily added. Do a search for volvo reverse latch and you should come up with a ton of info.
And yes you can raise the drive somewhat and go forward at idle speed only. No reverse as the drive is not locked and will pop up and destroy parts

I do see that you have through hull exhaust, probably because penta only had starboard exhaust tubes for theirAQ 4 cyl drives.

Re: Steering...

The punch list is dwindling but I have a real problem. I have a problem with the solenoid set up, and I can't find the old solenoids. I guessed at how they should be wired and I guessed WRONG. I could hear sparking as I started to connect the ground to the block so I backed off real quick. I found this diagram:

attachment.php

The motor has a four connector molex connector. I THINK I know which ones go to the motor... are the other two the switch? In and out for down?

Here is the updated punch list:
  • Install & connect lever set. DONE!
  • Realign throttle cable holder on carburetor. DONE!
  • Vacuum Debris DONE!
  • Modify Battery compartment and install Deep cycle battery. DONE!
  • Install hold down strap on starting battery. DONE!
  • Move Electric Fuel Pump. DONE!
  • Plug Carburetor Vent. DONE!
  • Hook up coil DONE!
  • Install Alternator charging wire. DONE!
  • Run tach wire. DONE!
  • Terminate and hook up low oil pressure and alt lights in the engine compartment (wires already pulled). DONE!
  • Terminate Front Compartment Power Feed and mount Battery Switch. DONE!
  • Start engine.
  • Install & wire Bilge Blower. DONE!
  • Install both bilge pumps. One auto and one on demand. I have to drill another vent through the hull for this.
  • Run wires & install switches for both pumps. Almost complete!
  • Finish wiring and testing tilt relays and switch. NEED WIRING SCHEMATICS!!!
  • Mount Bow and stern navigation lights (LED). I drilled the bow for the LED port/starboard light this afternoon. The stern hole is already there.
  • Run navigation light wires. DONE!
  • Finish install of VHF.
  • Make sure the VHF antennae will raise.
  • Attach flag pulley, line and cleat on VHF antennae.
  • Install speakers and finish install of stereo.
  • Install water protector for stereo. DONE!
  • Install/wire horn and button. Attach whistle to dash.
  • Buy & install depth sounder for dash.
  • Install SO shift cable and test.
  • Install baffles (engine compartment)
  • Finish the transfer of ownership. DONE!
  • Put new ID on boat.

Re: Steering...

The diagram you are showing is for a three wire motor
