Hello,
I am working to restore a mistreated 1989 Evinrude 9.9 HP outboard. The heavy steel washer that goes onto the output shaft before the prop, is rust frozen in place. I have soaked it with penetrating oil for several days and given it several sharp blows with a brass drift, to no avail. I checked my boat dealership for a special tool for removal, and was told that there is none. I am reluctant to use heat, as there is a seal directly behind it. Any suggestions on how to free it up?

Re: Frozen Washer

Try a mixture of auto transmission fluid and acetone; spray it on and let set overnight. good luck.

Re: Frozen Washer

Can I use a bit of heat from a MAPP gas plumbers torch without doing damage to the seals?

Re: Frozen Washer

Are you beating the washer on the sides of it ??

Re: Frozen Washer

No, I am hitting straight down on one side, then the other, in an effort to break it free. Would be hard to hit it on its sides due to lack of space.

Re: Frozen Washer

Try what Will said in post #4 and mix it 50/50, be patient and rap it on and off when soaking.
