Frustrasted with stator

I did the tests and stator showed bad. My new one delivered today and thought I would check ohms across the two yellow wires to see the difference between a good one and my bad one. It measures the same
What am I doing wrong here????

Probably not knowing what to expect. There should be very low resistance across those two wires. I don't know the spec right offhand, but probably around an ohm or less. That would show up as a dead short on a cheap analog multimeter, but a good digital meter will give a good reading.

Did you have the ohmmeter on LO ohms scale between the yellow and yellow/gray. A reading of .25 ohms + or - .1 indicates the windings are good, and an infinite reading indicates the windings are open. If windings are found to have failed, the stator must be replaced. And as FR said, all meters read this differently. What exact meter do you have?

I have an inexpensive digital multimeter from Sears that is pretty old. I am going to take the stator to work with me. The maintenance folks have a high quality meter there.

throw the ohms out and get a dva and use volts
ohms are useless, only good to double check after volts were used

What was the original problem? Since you're checking the yellow wires we'll assume it had something to do with the charging or tach.

It was not charging. I only read the battery voltage. I got several pointers on what and how to check in another post. I ran tests and concluded the stator was bad because I can't seem to get the .25 ohms across the two yellow wires.

I ordered a new stator based on this test. It sounds like I need to put the old stator back on for further tests. Is the DVA meter just a peak hold meter? I have access to one if so.

DVA is "Direct Volt Amps". They are specialty meters for measuring average DC voltages and AC voltage spikes on ignition systems. You can also get a DVA adaptor for your multimeter.

Chuck, You can successfully check a stator with an ohmmeter, provided the meter is of reasonable quality. I was given one that could not differentiate between a dead short and 400 ohms. I threw that one out.

Chuck, You can successfully check a stator with an ohmmeter, provided the meter is of reasonable quality. I was given one that could not differentiate between a dead short and 400 ohms. I threw that one out.

I have now checked both the new and old stator with 4 different meters(2-digital & 2-analog). All give the same results on both stators. All read the same as touching the leads together-0000.

Did you check the rectifier? The diodes in them are the first to go.

I did check them. They read high in one direction and low in the other direction. But I believe this is where the regulated/watercooled regulator comes into play. Someone else told me that you can't test it the same???

Run a lead from the gray wire from the tach to the yellow gray wire connector previously discussed. If the tach now works, you definately need to replace the rectifier. This method is fully detailed in JOE REEVES FAQ post. Ill post the link below. He explains it best . Good luck.

when testing the stator, did you check for a short to ground? Hook up the meter with one probe on a yellow wire and the other to the frame of the stator, check this way with both yellow wires. If there is any reading, stator is no good.

I had a feeling you had rectifier issues , given your last thread.

Don't get me wrong here because I really appreciate your help and everyone elses help. But I determined the rectifier was good after your instructions on how to test it. It was only after I had pulled the flywheel someone else posted that it can't be checked that way.

I'm new to outboard repair and I guess as the title says, "FRUSTRATED". Again HighTrim thanks for your help and I know it's hard to help someone diagnose issues over the internet.

I'm not sure if stator's are returnable. I suppose I have no choice but to put the stator back on the engine and start over.

Was your tach. working? My tach started acting up and the motor quit charging as well. Turned out to be the rectifer. Easy and cheap change out took care of my problems.

Hi Chuck,
Did you ever verify that you have battery voltage on the purple wire going to the regulator when the key is on? That is the first step in testing a regulator in the instructions in my manual. It won't charge without battery voltage going to the regulator on the purple lead.

A little background on the boat... I purchased it after it had sit for 3-4 years. The batteries were of course dead but I did get it cranked just to verify it ran. The tach did NOT work from the first startup. I thought, (could be wrong) that I saw the voltage guage going to near 14 at that time. I then did the water pump and built the carbs.

When I got it all back together and tested it all seemed fine untill I looked at the guage. I checked voltage at the battery leads and was not getting a charge from motor.

Guy74...when I get it all put back together I will retest that also. BTW, I assume that would test for a faulty key switch, correct?
