I guess that a faulty key switch or a faulty wire or connection between the key and the regulator. I know that it won't charge without battery voltage to the regulator, as I posted in your other thread about when I was testing my 100XP on a stand. I don't think that the key turns on anything else back at the motor, I might be wrong but i can't think of anything else that it does back at the motor exept maybe the vro warning system. So you might not see any other signs that it isn't working. I hope you find your answer soon.

Ran Joe Reeves tach/rectifier test. The tach would twitch but that's it.

Can I do the running stator test with a multimeter that has a peak hold?

Running test should be AC voltage from stator to reg/rect. Not sure of the value, but I'm guessing over 25 VAC is what you should expect. (My old J 140 was around 50 VAC as I recall).

I just noticed ones of magnets was loose in the flywheel. Would this cause my problems? Can it be reattached? If so how?

Chuck, As stated, check the stator for AC voltage. On my '98 Johnny 150, the voltage is across both yellow leads. You should get at least 15VAC. It you get some voltage, the stator is likely good.

Magnets are epoxied in place. If any are missing, BRP dealer can get you a magnet kit with special epoxy. Metal must be cleaned really well before gluing magnets in place. And no, they shouldn't be loose.

OMC makes a kit just for those flywheels. The kit includes spacers that are permanently install to prevent the magnets from comming loose again.

The only thing I have found is the kit with a single magnet and epoxy. Can you point me to a kit with the new style retainers?

Couple of things to point out about stators

Ohm meters LIE like a rug

DVA is the only reliable cranking/running test. Period

If a DVA meter is NOT available OR if the stator is 'on the bench' you may test the charging coils with a 12 volt battery and a test light by connecting the coil in series with the battery and test light, if the light fails the coil is bad.

If a DVA meter is NOT available OR if the stator is 'on the bench' you may test the charging coils with a 12 volt battery and a test light by connecting the coil in series with the battery and test light, if the light fails the coil is bad.

I have this all back together now and still have no charge. I have also tried to read any voltage between the yellow wires while running. I do not get anything. Do you agree there should be voltage measured between the two yellow wires?

I have done the Joe tach/rect test again and I still show the tach bad. Of course the tach and rect could both be bad.

I do not get voltage between yellow wires with new stator installed. I did not get proper ohm reading on new or old stator. As I said before I tried 4 different meters to get a reading. It leads me to believe the new stator is bad also.

Yep, I cleaned up both surfaces real good and used a high strength 2 part to reattach it. It was not damaged at all it had just slide over against another magnet.

I went outside and started up my Xp 100 which should be a system like yours I had 15.3 volts AC across the yellow leads coming off the stator. Is the stator you are testing a new one? BTW, I have had no trouble bench testing a stator with an ohm meter, my cheap one or the high quality one I have give the same results. Well I better go clean up my mess from running my motor, it's 31 degrees and sleeting outside outside. I don't want anything to freeze so I'm gonna point a space heater at my motor til I'm sure it's drained.

Thanks for confirming that! I did put the new stator on because it was not returnable anyway. I get NO voltage reading across the yellow stator leads. I thought about the flywheel magnets being weak but I would think there would be at least weak voltage in that case.

Chuck,
Did you get a OEM stator or an aftermarket one? I put on a CDI stator this summer, it had the wiring switched around in the plug that goes to the power pack. That would have nothing to do with your problems but it showed that it wasn't checked out very well at the factory. It did wok fine after I switched the wires around, but it gave me a good reason to buy OEM parts from now on. I was able to diagnose my bad stator with an OHM meter, and the new on tested within specs with the OHM meter. So I guess you might have 2 bad stators, I've bought bad new parts before.
