Can anyone recommend an in-line filter to use on my 1990 carbureted 4.3l Merc alpha one? Does it have to be marked USCG approved? Also required fuel hose markings ? Will automotive fuel line meet the requirements of USCG?

Ayuh,..... The fuel line needs to be Coast Guard approved, 'n will say so, on the fuel line,.....

An in-line fuel filter is 'bout useless on a boat motor, as particulate contamination is rarely the problem, but water is most always the problem,....
Therefor, a canister type water separating fuel filter is the best answer, mounted 'tween the tank, 'n the fuel pump,....

Is that hose marking J1527-A1? Or does it have to say "USCG approved" on it?

See hose classifications below

USCG Fuel Hose Ratings: The rating system exclusively for marine hose is known as SAE J1527

A1 Fuel Feed Hose: A1-15 Hose can be used for any applications and is the safest
    • Applications: Fuel Feed Hose
    • Designed to have fuel in the hose at all times
    • Permeation Rating: 100 g/m2/24 hours
    • Fire resistance: Tested for 2.5 minutes exposed to open flame
    • Lowest permeability making it appropriate for any application
    • Newest evolution is A1-15, which meets new higher EPA standards for ultra low permeation.
  • A2 Fuel Fill and Vent Hose:
    • Applications: Fuel Vent Hose
    • Not Designed to have fuel in the hose at all times
    • Permeation Rating: 300 g/m2/24 hours
    • Fire resistance: Tested for 2.5 minutes exposed to open flame
  • B1 Fuel Feed Hose:
    • Applications: Diesel / Gasoline* Fuel Feed hose
    • Intended diesel engines or above deck outboard gasoline applications
    • * Note: Cannot be used for Gasoline lines located in enclosed spaces
    • Designed to have fuel in the hose at all times
    • Permeation Rating: 100 g/m2/24 hours
    • Fire resistance: Not tested for Fire Resistance
  • B2 Fuel Vent Hose:
    • Applications: Diesel Vent Hose
    • Intended diesel engines or above deck outboard gasoline applications
    • * Note: Cannot be used for Gasoline lines located in enclosed spaces
    • Not Designed to have fuel in the hose at all times
    • Permeation Rating: 300 g/m2/24 hours
    • Fire resistance: Not tested for Fire Resistance

Ideally you want metal line between the fuel pump & carb or EFI, and yes a canister fuel filter between the tank & fuel pump. If you can’t use metal line between the pump & carb/EFI Sierra does make a flex line that is approved for this use.

I'm just looking to tie my new canister water and fuel filter to my fuel pump about 12". I cant seem to find any USCG approved fuel line on line or in my area without buying 10ft length. All of the local boat yards have closed up.
