Re: Fuel Injection

Erik;

Ah, yes. I know the company well. I have been in correspondence with them for some time. Their systems are not CG approved, but they do sell various (approved) compnents. This leaves the compliance up to the installer. While something like this does not intimidate me, I would prefer to purchase something approved as an assembly--particularly with me having to buy TWO of 'em.....

Keep in mind that CG compliance depends on the installer, too... even if the components/kit are CG compliant out of the box, if you install it you have to do so in a compliant way.

The only way to avoid all that headache is to go with a marine shop for the install that will do it correctly then inspect it and provide a guarantee.

The main reason we decided against an FI upgrade for the big boat (dual chryslers) that I crew on is that it buys only a percentage of horsepower for nearly the cost of a new engine... it makes more sense to go with a pair of newer, bigger engines instead.

Re: Fuel Injection

Thanks for the info... and CG rules aside for a minute, I think it's a nice piece of work.
Now make your 'kit', get it 'certified' and be rich! :)
Sometimes the replies here can be harsh or even rude... and some people too... but don't take it personally... they're only trying to help.

I have had the lower unit apart replacing some seals, water pump, bellows, and trim sender/limit switches. I got all that done a few weeks ago.

Last sunday it got up to 60 degrees here, so I pulled it out of the garage, hooked up the hose and fired it up. I did some tuning on it and got it to idle as smooth as silk at about 550 RPM. I was hoping it would be nice this weekend and I could take it to the lake to do some more tuning, but they are calling for snow  I will post a video the next time I get it out.

Re: Fuel Injection

Instead of getting the Edelbrock, can I pull the mpfi intake, and it's accesories off of any sbc at a junkyard?

I'm in the planning phases of building a MPFI SBC using the 350 HO Crate Engine.

Yes, but about the only one that would work is the TPI setup. I used the Edelbrock setup because I had it laying around. Its actually a TBI ECM converted to run MPFI and a TBI throttle body with the injector pod removed. To run a Vortec truck intake you would need Vortec heads, the Vortec truck intakes are not very desirable because the injection system is very unusual. The cheapest way to go would be to get a complete TBI system, they are plentiful.

The 350 HO crate has the iron Vortec heads. Which efi oem intake can I use? I've been searching the net for this info for 2 days now. What is so unusual about truck efi?

Re: Fuel Injection

Ok...did some researching on TPI. Will the TPI Hook up to the vortec heads?

thanks....

There is an aftermarket TPI base that has the Vortec bolt pattern. Last I heard it was pretty expensive.

The Vortec truck intake usees what is called a spider injection system. It is almost impossible to modify and was not designed for any type of performance use.

SDPC has this TPI base for vortec heads

Re: Fuel Injection

In reading Dennis Moores book, he specifies that the 87-95 External coil HEI distributors that are found in autos are IDENTICAL to the marine version and that those automotive disctributors can be used. Same part number as well. Thats good news as 96LT4 is using one of those. One less thing to rag him about.

Re: Fuel Injection

Any idea if the TPI Throttle body will clear the mercury thermostat housing? How much higher (if at all) is the plenum, compared to the carb/flame arrester?

If it fits, I'll go with the TPI vortec base MPFI. I've seen plenty of TPI setups for sale on ebay and craigslist cheap.

I'll have to decide if 350 HO Crate would be a good long block to start with. Let me know what you guys think. Will I have issues with reversion?

Re: Fuel Injection

It doesn't look like it will fit. Any ideas to retrofit? How about an LT1 Intake?

Re: Fuel Injection

Indmar did an LT1 towboat motor, but I do not know how they ran the coolant lines. What you COULD do is run two standard thermo housings. Use a TPI one, connect hose, mount merc thermostat housing somewhere and install a standard SBC thermo housing reversed under that. So the hose will go from one to another and in the thermostat and act like normal.

Re: Fuel Injection

Mkos,

That is why I love this forum (and others too), quick responses with excellent solutions/ideas/info. I had the idea of using the standard SBC housing and relocating the Merc housing with a welded fitting. Why make it so difficult? Thanks Mkos!! Your way sounds much easier. Just need to figure where I'll mount it and find hoses to fit. I'll do that when I test install the head.

I'm planning on fresh water full cooling. How will this affect the idea? I just noticed crusader uses only the standard SBC thermostat housing with the fresh water cooling system. I'm not familiar with how cooling works on marine engines much less fresh water cooling.

Thanks again...

Re: Fuel Injection

LT1 intake needs a lot of mods to make it bolt up, and it sits lower than the TPI.

If you are talking about mounting a remote t stat housing you could definatly make it work though.

Re: Fuel Injection

I'll go with the remote thermostat housing. Now I need to figure out if the GM 350 HO Crate will be ok in regards to water reversion.

Thanks...Hope the weather warms up a bit for your test ride.

Re: Fuel Injection

Hey 96,
Your conversion looks pretty well engineered to me. I wonder if you could go into more detail about your o2 sensor setup. I have a stock big block carbed chevy with volvo marinization that I would love to be able to monitor my fuel ratios with as I tweak it for a little more milage in these stressful times. :)
