Hi , Im new to this site so i hope i do this ok.
i have a 61 40 horse johnson. been sitting for 2 years. i cant get it to run unless i squirt gas into carb. been through carb, cleaned out main jet and needle and seat. been through fuel pump, looks ok there diaphram ok, and replaced the ends on the fuel line. put new clamps on all lines. vacuum and press and fuel. (had leak at tank end of fuel line) filled up tank 1/2 way and pumped up pressure. i can see the sedament bowl fill and there is gas in the main bowl on the carb if i remove plug. I tried to start yesterday and got it to run a few seconds but pops and spits out carb.(sorta like a backfire out carb) used to do this a little when cold. battery was low so i charged over nite. now this morning i tried to start again but nothing unless i spray gas into carb. one thing i noticed was that in the sun yesterday if i opened the gas cap on the tank there was pressure, (from the sun heating up tank) cold today and no pressure. i cant rember if there is supposed to be tank pressure when you pump up bulb or just line pressure. instinct tells me that if i have gas in the main bowl on the carb it should start and run untill the gas empties from the bowl if i have a fuel pump issue or a needle/seat issue. i sure could use a few ideas Thanks for the help
