Hi , Im new to this site so i hope i do this ok.
i have a 61 40 horse johnson. been sitting for 2 years. i cant get it to run unless i squirt gas into carb. been through carb, cleaned out main jet and needle and seat. been through fuel pump, looks ok there diaphram ok, and replaced the ends on the fuel line. put new clamps on all lines. vacuum and press and fuel. (had leak at tank end of fuel line) filled up tank 1/2 way and pumped up pressure. i can see the sedament bowl fill and there is gas in the main bowl on the carb if i remove plug. I tried to start yesterday and got it to run a few seconds but pops and spits out carb.(sorta like a backfire out carb) used to do this a little when cold. battery was low so i charged over nite. now this morning i tried to start again but nothing unless i spray gas into carb. one thing i noticed was that in the sun yesterday if i opened the gas cap on the tank there was pressure, (from the sun heating up tank) cold today and no pressure. i cant rember if there is supposed to be tank pressure when you pump up bulb or just line pressure. instinct tells me that if i have gas in the main bowl on the carb it should start and run untill the gas empties from the bowl if i have a fuel pump issue or a needle/seat issue. i sure could use a few ideas Thanks for the help

Re: fuel issue

One thing I have done before is connected the hose into the tank backwards so you get like vapor lock and forgot to open the vent cap on the tank

Re: fuel issue

thanks for your reply, i didnt remove the slow speed adjustment screw but i will and see if there is issue there. i checked the link you added ( nice )
i will turn in and count before i remove adjustment needle however. still wondering about not running if i have fuel in carb bowl. shouldnt it start and run till bowl empties if i have fuel pressure issues or sticking needle/ seat? engine vacuum from piston travel should draw fuel from bowl and allow engine to at least try and start.

Re: fuel issue

also, still wondering about tank pressure. does pumping bulb pressurize tank or just line? old tank (metal type) no vent on tank cap or on tank

Re: fuel issue

you could have a stick needle or float. pumping the buld pressurizes the line from the bulb to the carb, when the fuel pump kick in and the float drops, the pump suck gas from the tank and pressurizes to the carb. new tanks have vents. the old one didn't as the engine pump air into the tank to push gas to the carbs. also having a clogged low speed jet will not let the fuel in.

Re: fuel issue

Does the bulb stay pumped up and stays that way while it is running? and do you may have an fuel filter inline that is bad not letting gas through... any crack fuel hoses will not let fuel flow properly... just some things to ck.
