fuel leaking out of connector barb?

I just bought this boat, tried to start it up today. When I was priming the bulb fuel was coming out of the male/female connector barb, without the ball really getting hard. I haven't had a boat for awaile, but I don't remember this ever happening. This should be a easy question. Befor I went out and bought a new one, I thought id get some of your thoughts on this. Do these things go bad, It could be missing a seal O-ring or something. Ive never used this type of connector. Appreciate any thoughts. thx

When you say the connector barb do you mean the plug that hooks to the motor? If that's what you are talking about it may not be fully connected. Sometimes you have to push hard to get them to lock. There should be an o-ring at the end of the plug as well. Also if it is squirting fuel out that would be why your bulb isn't getting hard.

I'm a fan of getting rid of the connector at the motor. I take mine off and run the fuel hose right to the carb. No chance of leaks or air getting in the line that way.

Thats the kind of connector im using I think it might need a O-ring, I dont remember if these have them or not.
I like the idea of running the hose without a connector havent thought of that, and if I cant get this barb thing working im doing that forsure, thx again

That's not the connector I was thinking of. I'm pretty sure that uses an o-ring though. Is that on the tank side?

The male part is on the motor18-8084_big.jpg and the female is after the bulb. I think its gotta have a o-ring, I dont see why it would be leaking like that. Was hoping someone knew.

Re: fuel leaking out of connector barb?

I had that set up on my old boat on the tank end. I'm sure there is an o-ring in there, but I can't remember where it sits. In my opinion that is not the greatest kind of connector. I would replace it or just plumb directly to the carb as bonairll suggested. I trust his judgement and if he says it works it's good enough for me.

I would still go through my fuel pump not just straight to the carbs but at least I could of gave the motor a chance to start. I dont think it had the pressure, so if i thought of that last night I would of did it =], anyway ill figure it out, thx for the talk.

All of the fuel connectors have a O ring to seal the fittings off and also a vavle built into them to shut off the fuel, and the ones shown and mercury fittings, and they do wear and replacments can be picked up at wal-mart of many other places. and yes if its leaking fuel just sitting it will suck air and cause problems when the motor is running.

Welcome back to boating! That's the new excitement edge of modern boating. They've modified fuel lines to deliberately spew fuel. Will it go up in flames, will it not? The suspense is insane! Add cigarettes and BBQ's to the deck to take it to the next level!

I'm sorry man I just couldn't help myself :p

I had the exact same problem with mine; had to replace that fitting. The original part just would not seal. The new one was only $12 at the local marina. As I recall there was NOT an O-ring or seal in the assembly (which was my first guess when it started leaking).
