Hello,
I like many others here have just aquired a 1978 Mercury outboard. Its a Mariner 900. It has been sitting for about 2-3 years, and I am in the process of tearing it down, and cleaning it up. Its on a 1978 Monark McFast 17 fiberglass bass boat.

My question is, I have taken off the fuel pump to replace the diaphram, but I cant get the two parts separated. I took out the bolts obviously, and I can't seem to get them to pull apart. I don't wany to pry on it and mar up the surfaces. Is there any special tricks to get this thing apart?

Thanks.

Nate.

Re: Fuel pump question

If the bolts are removed, tap the outside of the housing with a hammer

1978 Mariner? I didn't realize that the Mariner name was used that far back. Was that the first year for Mariner nameplates?

Re: Fuel pump question

From what I can tell it is.

Is there somewhere I can search the serial numbers to find out the exact info on the motor?

Re: Fuel pump question

thanks for the help.

used a few "health" taps with the hammer, and it finally opened up.

Also got the 3 carbs off today, and cleaned them up.

I was checking the wiring in several spots and noticed that it had melted together, and had numberous burnt spots.

So all the wiring has been removed,(with a single strand left to pull the new stuff through.) and I'm getting ready to pull through new wiring as soon as I figure out exactly what I want and where.
I think that doing it this way will be much easier, and safer. I saved what I could of the harness, so I could use the main plug, and just connect new wires from that point.

Looks like I'll be spending some time studying the wire diagrams tonight.

again thanks for the help.

Nate.
