First off, Thank you I appreciate any help, this site and people on it are great!

I have a 16' Galaxie Granada trihaul with a 85 horse Johnson model# 85Esl75E. I put a new battery on her, choked her and she fired right up. I'd like to restore this boat tell me what you think if it would be worth the time and money. Meanwhile I'll be trying to figure out how to upload pictures, I've attached one with spider crack outside glass near transom. There looks to be a patch job over the gas tank that allowed water to seep through into the bottom so I believe I'll be pulling the cap. This is my first experience with a boat and will need any and all expertise given. I've been reading up on alot of restore projects and I'm going to take the time to do this right, let me know if you think the boat is worth the work. I believe the engine may need a little tlc but overall it is a good engine, isnt it?

That is a nice looking boat, should be a fun project. Any boat we decide to invest time in, is worth it if you want my opnion.

Welcome to the Dry Dock, officially now :)

Couple questions pros, the floor is rotted, soft spots and a shotty repair over tank that allowed water to leak through and get to the stringers, I plan on the full ball bang out restore job so how do I start, take off engine / accessories, rubrail pull cap support the bottom and there she be? I've put an hour on this post now time to get out to the garage and start getting prepared, any and all help is appreciated, Thanks!

Thanks Trooper82, Really enjoyed reading through all your work, guess the books in bed will be put off for the iboats forum now a day and I'm psyched every second just thinking about it. Time to get to it!

Youi might want to start with a stand for your outboard.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=9704

I wouldn't pull the cap until some others climb aboard with better advice than I can give in that area.

I know that if you need to pull it there are alot of things that need to be considered first.

I would design a cradle before gutting it. When you take the cap off and rip out the stringers you might lose alittle bit of the hull shape. Also it would be easier to ROLL the boat over without damaging the boat if you deside to flip it. Atleast support the sides before you remove the cap. It would make it easier to fit the cap back on aswell.

Thanks JitterBug, You got any ideas how to make a cradle? I've got access to styrofoam bloacks that are rouchly 1' x 1' x 1.5' thought about using some of those to rest her on. I'm gonna get my engine off this weekend and hopefully start on a cradle. Thanks for your help btw!

KB,

I made one for my boat, no plans just went at it. Using hind sight I would have went about it a little differently. I did not take into account the curvature of the bow. WoodonGlass had a really good idea I did not see till it was too late.

See post #287 below. I think it would work out nicely for a boat the size of yours.

Very nice cradle by trooper. My only concern would be the "sides" of the boat. When/if you pull the cap the sides of the hull will bow out. That could make it difficult to replace the cap. In Oops's extension thread, he used All Thread Rods, nuts and fender washers. I think that is a great idea. Others have used lumber which is the route I took. Very pleased with my results. I'm workin on a tri-hull aswell.

As others have stated, It is very important to take and record accurate measurements of all the dimensions of the boat while the cap is still on. Once the cap has been removed, the easiest way to keep the sides of the hull from flexing is to use nylon straps. When you get ready to attach the deck permanently it is imperative that you ensure the sides of the hull are at the exact measurements as they were when the cap was on the boat.

I really appreciate the advice, WoodonGlass. I will definitely record this, thanks for the reminder, I think I will upload some pictures to scale then replicate the boat as a drawing and use specifics. I am a drafter by trade and this will go hand in hand. Just got back from the lumber company, I'm going to unload, organize and post a pic of my scrap wood bundle and the deal I got for $10. Hopefully work today will include motor mount w/casters and start on cradle with a plan for all this work to take place.

Question: How do you attach nylon straps to the sides? "am thinking a clamp"

Re: Galaxie Granada Trihaul Restoration "Please help"

I have my engine stand built, am going to use a chain and straps to pull her off the boat. Now my question is on the disconnecting of all the "stuff" from the engine. I've seen a guy pull all the "stuff" from the boat and keep it hooked up to the engine, then he wound it up and put it on the stand beside the engine, is this the best way to do it? I will be going through the engine for a complete overhaul when I have time, money and knowledge so....well let me know what you think.

Beautiful day in Kansas, on the brim of 80 deg F. Walleye started spawnin on the rocks, might have to get me a kayak or canoe soon just to get out on the water! Have a good day folks.

Welcome Kansas!

You could remove the controls and take them out with the motor if you don't want to disconnect everything.

Your cradle doesn't need to be elaborate it just needs to support the hull along the chines... Looks like your on a bunk trailer supporting the inner area.....just need to support the outside.

After you have your motor off and your interior gutted you cant start removing your sole and see whats hiding below deck....

Post lots of pics of your discovery and we'll guide you along.
Lots of reading ahead for you ;) Read up on resto threads most posted in peoples signatures...
Before any cutting or grinding of fiberglass get the proper safety gear.... a GOOD respirator (not a dust mask) Tyvec suit, goggles, gloves and lots of baby powder to keep the itch down.

Welcome to the club! :D

Yep, put it all with the motor on the stand. On the straps, you wrap em around the entire hull and tighten em to keep it from "Opening Up" on you. like this...

Thanks fellas, appreciate the welcome. Guess my problem is the "stuff runs through a hole in the rear then connects to the engine, the throttle won't fit through the hole. I'll do some more lookin and see what the best route is, I've got my pulley system up and just trying to find best way to disconnect everything to get the engine off, I'll be posting some pics for sure. I'm going to pull the trailer out for a redo on her as well. I'm hoping engine out and cradle up, trailer out for tomorrow.
