Re: Gas Can Thief

Not that I'm condoning the use of Sodium Silicate, but the question was asked. ;)

The sea foam and wild life camera idea sounds the best, although that would be an expensive proposition for all that sea foam. Perhaps a little kerosene, or diesel mixed into the gas would be cheaper. The camera is some money if the OP doesn't own one, but if he's so inclined, I would pick up one with an IR flash. I would imagine if the thief saw the flash, and found the camera, that may go walking as well.

I like the Sea Foam idea. I personally think it would be a lot funnier if the perp's engine suddenly started spewing gobs of smoke causing him/her to think twice about petty theft but not really destroying anything. I understand the desire to see his or her engine seize, but we're talking about being the one to inflict thousands in damage and possibly leave someone stranded over a couple hundred dollars' (if that) worth of stuff. Not only that, but what if for some reason someone innocent unknowingly used the gas? Think about it. There are many scenarios in which that's possible. Not worth it. Do the Seafoam trick and prepare to laugh your arse off. Welcome to iboats.

My opinion only but I Don't agree with this, The thief deserves anything that happens to him / her as a result of using the stolen gas. Do the crime pay the price.

I hear ya. I hate a thief as much as the next guy. I just fear for this youngster if said thief tries to cause problems civilly, legally or otherwise as a result of his destroying property valued many times in excess of what was stolen. Happens all the time. Ain't right, but it's so. Not only that, but what about the buddy who runs out of gas and uses the doctored can not knowing it will destroy his motor. Just doesn't seem worth it to me. Like you said though. Just our opinions.

I dunno. All that stuff sounds a lil too sophisticated for me. Might forget'n mix up the gas cans ... Why not just camp out til ya catch the thief. Then give him a good ole fashioned azz kicking?

Not a chance in "heck", that the thief would be able to PROVE that the victim purposely put something in the gas can to damage the thief's motor.

I would purposely leave out my valuables....and set out video cameras etc. I'd wait for the thief and have a "blanket party" for him.

Ah yes I see. And you've been practicing law for how many years now? "Baiting" a criminal is called entrapment, and only cops are allowed to do it ...

Re: Gas Can Thief

Law enforcement is not allowed to entrap a person.

Excerpt taken from wikipedia:

In criminal law, entrapment is conduct by a law enforcement agent inducing a person to commit an offense that the person would otherwise have been unlikely to commit.[1] In many jurisdictions, entrapment is a possible defense against criminal liability. However, there is no entrapment where a person is ready and willing to break the law and the government agents merely provide what appears to be a favorable opportunity for the person to commit the crime. For example, it is not entrapment for a government agent to pretend to be someone else and to offer, either directly or through an informant or other decoy, to engage in an unlawful transaction with the person (see sting operation). So, a person would not be a victim of entrapment if the person was ready, willing and able to commit the crime charged in the indictment whenever opportunity was afforded, and that government officers or their agents did no more than offer an opportunity.

Cops set out "bait cars" all the time. They simply leave the keys in the ignition(with/without the engine running).

Me leaving a bicycle, a gas can, or maybe leaving my golf clubs in my own yard is NOT entrapment.

I am a fan of putting diesel in the can. Now, who can say you accidentally didn't leave your gas can at the docks and it isn't illegal to fill a gas can with diesel is it? Plus the thief will have to pump all their gas out and dispose of it over a gallon or 2. And some seafoam.

Re: Gas Can Thief

I had a 20lt tote tank taken from my boat a little while ago, what really annoyed me was whoever took it instead of just unclipping the fuel line from the motor end or from the tank end they just cut the fuel line in half, so it cost me a tank, 20lt of fuel and a new fuel line. Needless to say nothing stays in the boat anymore, anything that is not bolted down lives in the garage untill required for use.

What about ginding up some metal to a dust and suspending it in the tank / fuel?

I would glue one of the small GPS sending units to the bottom of the can, and show up with the cops.
