In Virginia we get our highway taxes refunded--$0.17 per gallon--by sending in to the state the amount of gas you bought for the boat. I did mine for the past year, and found:

Good news: the state will send me $61.00

Neutral news: I used 359 gallons last year (per receipts; maybe a little more)

What is was: At $2.50 a gallon about average, I spent about $900

What it will be: at $3.80 a gallon now, it will be about $1,365. I'm not doing any more math on what it could be!

This is a 150 2 stroke Yam on a 21' CC. I guess about 100 hours, mostly cruising around 3500-4000 rpm

That's a good way to think about it. I kinda' wish I hadn't done the math which told me (at current pricing) I'm spending $1.50 per minute while haulin' butt, that's almost enough to get me to slow down.

Re: Gas $$$

Just bought an inflatable with a 3.5 hp outboard. I suspect it will get a lot more use this summer than my big boat. Big one sure looks nice sitting there though.

Re: Gas $$$

Gotta say, gas prices got me thinking my next boat "upgrade" may be a tinny; more room, less motor, and less gas spent towing it.

Outa sheer curiosity, what proof does your state require to prove that fuel was used in a boat? Will they only accept receipts from marinas?

$5.25 on the road here. I don't even want to think of what it will be at the marina.

Re: Gas $$$

It's the start of election years. The current president has to show that something is working to reduce the deficit. Higher gas prices mean higher revenues for the govt. What better way to raise taxes without raising taxes. Around November after the profiteering from selling off our reserves at the current falsely inflated rate is done oil prices will need to come down so that the cycle of buying low and selling high can repeat itself. The next repeat will be after the 2012 elections if they get the timing right.

Have you ever heard this before "The deficit is under control, oil prices are down and the economy is doing well. Vote for me!" It's a setup and we fall for it every time.

The president quite correctly stated that there is no silver bullet for fixing the gas problem. That is correct, silver bullets are for vampires and we're dealing with Satan himself.
