1970 165hp 250cid L6 Mercruiser I removed the exhaust tub from the transom plate and my newer book 1975 says it takes an o-ring. There is no O-ring there or any sighn of a gasket/sealer. it looks like a machined surface with just some spots of paint. Does this take a gasket or a sealer? The parts look up on line says O-ring too hmmm?

Ther wasn't one there and there's no groove for an o-ring. How would you keep an O-ring lined up there?

i ain't had my exhust tube off. so no expereince. service manual #1 says the same though. under exhaust elbow and shutter replacment, merc. 120-888. item 5. "place 'o' ring in groove of gimbal housing." 6. '' reinstall elbow with screws and lockwashers, torquing them to 20-25 ft. lbs. be certain that 'o' ring rmains seated in groove, properly sealing joint to prevent leakage."

got any pics?

I wanna say that the older ones do not have that groove to receive the o ring, but you need it.......;)

I scraped the surface and there is no groove. Also that hole is oval shaped so i dont know how the oring will stay i guess i'll have to adhere it ti the housing first and then install the tube. Could i just use adhesive? Or make a gasket? There was no O-ring when i took it apart?

Here's a pic of what it is supposed to look like from the manual - is it possible the inside "wall" of the groove is gone due to corrosion?

I have also heard of people filling the groove in with Marine Tex or other epoxy due to corrosion and pitting, then using a gasket. Perhaps that's what was done to yours?

The o ring is in the gimbal housing, not on the y pipe.....
Look real close, I'll wager the groove is there, just like Mark's pic shows.....;)

Well, I see the pic it's like my book 1975 my boat is 1970, There is no corrosion, O-ring or groove. I scraped it with the flat of a screwdriver and it is solid alum. Will automtive gasket with sealer work ok?

I'd hate to give you a bum steer....
I'd wait to see what don S suggests......
One thing is certain: If that joint leaks, you will take on water from outside the boat....;)

Ok Mr. Wizzard ;) I'm gonna let this thread fade into "previous thread" land before the whole boating comunity see's It and My reputation as half a mariner turns into a wanna be mariner. I have been on the water for quite sometime i twisted wrenches for 15yrs heavy equip and large vessels tugs barges a couple small ships and some others eg. "larc"s Do you know what a LARC is Don? So yeah i'm half a mariner i guess just been out of it for a bit.
