Sorry really have no info about the specific tool your asking for. But those pics/tools are cool as hell. How much did ya get all those specialized tools for?

Re: Gearcase tool

chum1 that's close to what I want but even so, they don't ship out of the US.
I drilled mine out by using a .250" drill to gage the center then used a .125" to drill 3 pilot holes thru the ring. Then I used the .250" to make a bigger hole then lightly tapped on the lugs and pried it; came out hard after 35 yrs in place but clean and no thread damage. I have to replace the tool because I broke it trying to use it to remove ring!

the tool runs about 90 bucks, I had my entire lower unit rebuilt for 70 bucks(just seals, not gears) do the math.

Glad to read you were able to remove the threaded lockring, I had the same fortunate experience before i had any kind of lower end tools to use,

I dont know why some companys wont ship out of the country?,( possibly patent infringements?) there is a "HUGE" market out there.

Your next hurdle will probably be removing the bearing carrier, good luck:)

Lets see: 3 weeks wait time + parts + your muffler bearing is shot + i didnt rip a hole in your seat = 1 month of pure frustration and no fun

or

buy the tool + learn how it ticks = happy camper with a tool to do it next time for just parts.;)

Re: Gearcase tool

I am going to remove the bearing carrier with the proper slide hammer this weekend it costs alot more to replace than that retainer nut. The manual says to clamp the prop shaft and "tap" the gearcase--is this a good way?

Re: Gearcase tool

Dear Chum1 here is the result of opening my 850 LU, the shop worked on it for 2+ hrs and put two cracks in it but it didn't come out. Well it was useless like that so I took my hand grinder and carefully cut it in half.
I had to see what was going on inside - the gears, bearings etc are perfect; the only worn parts are seals and the shift cam. I have a source for another complete one.

Jimmeney Christmas looks like they snapped the arms on the carrier bearing too!!, I would be highly upset as i think this could have been avoided, the book says to use a slide hammer but heat and steady pressure is the way to go for this.

My 850 was a salt water engine and there was no way it was coming apart without heat,( Learned this from and thanks to Chris from Australia)

Hopefully you found a good deal on another lower and can use all the internals over again ( except for the carrier), hopefully they have the right tools to make sure the pinion gear lines up with the drive gear correctly, I have heard it could be destroyed in short order if there not meshed and shimmed right:mad:

Wish the best of luck to you, its cases like this that i know i can do better.

3 weeks wait time? Good god, find a new dealer. My dealer did it in front of me in about an hour. I sat and watched. paid the man, and left a happy camper. I had mine fixed before you could even order the part. I'd check around for more dealers seriously.
