Hi
I have a 63' merc 500 50 hp. I didn't drain the lower leg last fall, and I came to find the prop and entire hub pushed out, and the retaining nut stripped of threads this spring.
I have a new retaining nut, but I can't get the prop-shaft and bearing carrier into the leg enough to get the nut to grab threads.
The "reverse gear?" is spring loaded and with enough force the prop-shaft will go a bit farther in, but I can't see if the bearing carrier 'shoves' in with it.
I'm getting a shop manual soon, but I wonder if someone can enlighten me as to if the bearing carrier & prop shaft need to be 'pressed' in enough to get the nut on?
I'll post some pics with the carrier and shaft in, and the housing with the carrier out soon.
