Hi
I have a 63' merc 500 50 hp. I didn't drain the lower leg last fall, and I came to find the prop and entire hub pushed out, and the retaining nut stripped of threads this spring.
I have a new retaining nut, but I can't get the prop-shaft and bearing carrier into the leg enough to get the nut to grab threads.

The "reverse gear?" is spring loaded and with enough force the prop-shaft will go a bit farther in, but I can't see if the bearing carrier 'shoves' in with it.

I'm getting a shop manual soon, but I wonder if someone can enlighten me as to if the bearing carrier & prop shaft need to be 'pressed' in enough to get the nut on?

I'll post some pics with the carrier and shaft in, and the housing with the carrier out soon.

Re: gears and prop-shaft install help.

If you shift the control lever into forward the carrier should push all the way in. There is a little notch in the bottom of the LU housing and it lines up with a notch in the bearing carrier, a key goes in there to hold the bearing carrier so make sure that they are lined up.

If you pulled the carrier out, make sure you get the shims in the correct way also

OK,
I pulled it out, without really expecting it to come out, and I'm not 100% sure where the shims go. Theres two, and I'm somewhat sure they both go at spot #63, up against the carriers thick washer, and between the housing's 'lip'.
Does that sound right?
