Hi everyone!Just finnished the overhaul of my outdrive, renewed gears, bearings, seals etc. While test driving at about 3200 rpm I placed hand on the cap of the upper unit and it felt hot but still possible to bear.Took the boat out ,released the tension(took out a shim) of the upper bearing slightly and tried again -felt slightly cooler ,but not much.May be that much heat is normal. It cools down immediately when the boat stops and the wake hits the stern and doesn`t seem to heat up before gettin on plane .Thanks for reading and i will expect your in sights! Are you sure it's full of oil?

Did you do the overhaul with the proper tools and feeler gauges for preload and rolling torque?

They will get warm but you should be able to keep your hand on it.

yes I filled up with 80w-90 gear oil .I didn`t want to use the quick silver brand, the first two- three hours .I used the shimming tools but mostly used the old shims, cause they seemed to work fine.

New gears MUST be reshimmed per the manual. Using the old shims will not work.

i've only shimmed once so i'm obviously no pro at it. but i did follow dons' advise. i did use the s/m and did exactly what it said to the best of my ability..

it's not weather the shim will work fine or not. ya could put any stack in and the shims themselves would work fine. it's the measuring of the gear teeth that is critical. how the gear teeth are in mesh.

my little job was only shimming the drive gear and driven gear in the upper. what i found was that your either wrong or right. on mine, the correct distance between the end of the teeth was .025. while shimming, i found that when finally accomplished. a .024 feeler gauge would slide between the teeth too easy. a .026 feeler gauge wouldn't go in w/o force or not at all. the .025 feeler gauge went in slightly tight. i measured on three teeth if i remember right. when i got these results at three places i figured i was hip.. fwiw, and i found it odd. but my shim stack was the same as what i'd taken out. but i'd guess that's not always the case. and certainly not something i would assume to be... why i was shimming was because of brg. replacement..

I got the same results on the upper gears .The lower unit was only resealed, cause everything looked right there.I`ve never put my hand on the upper unit lid and that heat surprised me ,but I assume that is the normal temperature during operation,so fingers crossed and hope it`ll be fine .Thanks!Bago.
