From what I have seen, the 18-20-25 horse Johnsons & Evinrudes through 1976 never offered any generator or alternator for the electric start versions. Does anybody out there know of a practical generator or alternator that can be used on one of these 22.09 c.i. powerheads? I assume the big old 25 (54-55), 28 (62-64), 30 (56), 33 (65-70), 35 (57-59), 40 (60-76 and possibly later as commercial 40) used a belt driven 5 amp generator, but there apparently doesn't seem to be any provision for using that stuff on the 18-20-25 from 1957-1976.

Was it 1957 when OMC switched from 6V to 12V, on the 35?

FWIW I know that the Canadian 20 horse Johnson in 1975 came with a built-in 45 watt AC generator with an external receptacle plug for running tools. Those would be rare and also not much use for a DC charging system.

What do people do on these electric start midrange motors to keep the batteries from going flat?

they recharge them when the first get in. a battery does not like to sit in a discharge state. the ones that had the charging systems only maintained the starting battery. would not keep up with trolling motor and accessories. a good full charged battery, should have no problem starting those motors, for a week or so, with out charging. if you have accessories, much shorter period.

1957 was the first year for 12V. I don't know about the charging options for those motors off hand.

One of those solar trickle chargers would work great to maintain a good battery through general starting and such. They might be taxed a bit, though, if you ran a lot of accessories and lights on a daily basis...

That's a SLICK idea with the ac generator for running tools! I wish they made one today or I could find an old one that had it. I would be the envy of the bayou out working on my duckblinds using power tools running off my boat motor!

Back in the day I remember seeing a brand new 1975 20 on a stand at the dealer. I remember that it had a removable round rubber plug over the outlet, which was located on the cowl base. I also remember it having some additional fins on the lower unit (not the bolt-on accessory kind either). The brochure simply shows an airbrushed 25 as a 20 so it is not correctly illustrated anywhere that I know of.

Anyway, thanks for the replies, people! :)
