Re: Get a load of this story!

Even as a Canadian I wouldn't rush out and cover for this guy based on what I'm reading so far.
For the simple reason as was previously mentioned...he was drunk at the time of the incident...which rarely creates solid thinking and judgement.
Everyone I've seen brought to task when their drunk behaves poorly most of the time and has something coming.
I bet there are 100 sober stories around this kind of incident that didn't make the news because there were no resulting problems.
He shouldn't have been pre-loading before the call was in on his status.
Canada and the U.S have a pretty good relationship around this kind of stuff and personally I would have no worries about crossing the border and expecting this incident in most cases.

Illegal alien is an illegal alien. Canadian, Mexican, British....whatever they are.

Is there not a difference between a tourist or visitor and an "illegal alien"?

or do you automatically suspect anyone who is foreign born of being here "illegally"?

Use your brain rat. A visitor or tourist are ALLOWED in. Wake up and put the bong down for awhile. You really embarrass yourself sometimes.

Maybe the headline should have read; 'Power trippin' customs officer meets beer guzzlin' boater in childish standoff'... officer wins with a big "na-na-nana-na".
Both the officer and the boater should've dealt with this diffrently. It's almost like some of the border people (heading north or south) like the confrontational conversation. I've experienced it myself but if you keep your attitude in check, there's not usually a problem. The boater in this case however, when asked to leave, (for whatever reason) should have left. A few beers is not 'drunk'... so get in your boat and go!

No embarassment here, and I don't need to make smart-***** comments about other people's presumed intoxication to make my point.

The guy showed up as a visitor from a friendly nation. He checked in and went to have a few drinks while awaiting what he probably expected to be a routine positive answer since it had always been before and he had no criminal record in either country. Instead, after getting his buzz on, he was told to leave, for reasons that we don't know and, given the paranoid fortress mentality that seems to be prevalent in this country recently, HE was probably not told either. Dude probably gets angry and confrontational and the paranoid police state border guys decided to make an example of him and throw him in the slammer for awhile rather than allowing the guy a few hours to compose himself and leave peaceably. Stupid overreaction on both sides probably, but most certainly on the US border cop side.

Why should we be arbitrarily denying a tourist from a friendly nation with no criminal background "permission" to spend the night on our soil? What's the point? Just to be belligerent and unwelcoming? Was the guy a critic of the president? Maybe the US border cop felt his manhood was insulted?

Whatever the reason, unless the guy was reasonably suspected of being a terrorist or other criminal, I don't see why he should be summarily ejected, let alone locked up at great expense just to prove "who's the boss".

But then again, that kind of jerk attitude seems to prevalent among American "cornservatives" everywhere these days...

Yeah, we believe in the rule of law and the enforcement of laws ...How stupid of us.....I guess we should just enforce and obey them when we feel like it...is that right rat?

If i have been reading the threads here correctly for the past several years, there are plenty of "cornservatives" who believe in strictly enforcing the law only as long as the lawbreakers in question aren't members of their political camp...

besides, there is a law against operating a boat while intoxicated in every state in the nation I would think, yet you seem to be saying that this guy should have broken that law in order to avoid breaking another one. Common sense on the part of the border agents would have gone a long way in resolving this peacefully, but they chose to be inflexible and devoid of common sense, resulting in this ridiculous outcome. You seem to be defending it out of a reflexive affinity for all things authoritarian.

There you go with the mind reading rat. I never said nor implied that at all. Guess he should have waited to have the beers. Either way, he loses and no one to blame but himself.

But I know, you need to find a victim to feel sorry for, so go ahead and feel sorry for him.

For those that don't know how it works you don't "wait" for an approval. Once you get to your destination on the us side you go to the video phone provided & call in. They will let you know right then & there if you can stay or not.
So it's not like he called in, went back to his boat & drank while he was waiting for Customs to call him back. The only way he coulda been drunk was when he got in the US, rather than checking in immediately, he sat around & got drunk.

This question has remained unanswered though, by the apologists for anything authoritarian...

Why should we be arbitrarily denying a tourist from a friendly nation with no criminal background "permission" to spend the night on our soil? What's the point?
