Get Rust off Gel Coat

I had been noticing discoloration in a few spots on the boat. I finally got the bright idea to look up and saw the rust dripping from roof of the dock (was able to tie the boat out of the way of the drip for the winter). Anyone have suggestions on what can be done to get the rust stain off the boat? Scrubbing with normal soap and water does nothing.

I bought some Attwoods Boat Cleaner/Wax from Walmart and that is good for removing most marks. However, for more stubborn marks I simply use auto rubbing compound, then go over with the Cleaner/Wax to raise the shine. Works for me.

If cleaner wax won't cut it then try Maguire's fine cut polishing compound and elbow grease (or an electric polisher like me!). Just remember to put a good coat of wax/polish back on the area afterwards.

I might try the rubbing compound. I worry about that attwood cleaner running down the side of the boat. It's in the water with bottom paint and I've had that stuff clean more than i was intending to before. I can't wax below the rub-rail (without a canoe or something).

Comes in a spray bottle. Spray and wipe. If it works... Stuff is good at calcium and lime but never had much luck on rust.

there are also other products specifically for rust though I can't think of the names of em right now... dang CRS syndrome

Might try TSP also, but any good rust remover would be my choice, not any compounds or abrasive cleaners.

I've also had good luck with CLR...if there's a way to let it sit for a while? Wetting a paper towel with CLR, taping plastic over it and too the hull?

Yeah, it's easy enough to get to I could try that.

Comes in spray bottles or a powder that you can mix with water for larger jobs.

I have had very good luck with commercial grade bathroom cleaners. If chemicals don't work I would step up to Mequires heavy cut cleaner, then 1200 grit sandpaper (with water), then 600 grit (also wet)

Have you tried a clay bar? This works well at removing rust stains from white paint.

I have well water and use this in the house. Works wonders in the sink showers bathtub etc, but I did try it on my tinny where there was some rusty hook stains. Took the paint off an area I let it sit.

I've used Rust Remover for this and it works. The key to removing tough stains in FG is acid- oxalic or muriatic. I think you'll find that the rust removers contain oxalic acid as the primary active ingredient. Works on stuff like scum lines, too. Nothing takes off barnacles but scraping, sad to say.

If the above fail~~ get a gallon of muriatic acid ( $5 ) from the hardware store. You will need rubber gloves and a rag. Rub lightly with damp rag, dry and wax. Rust, blood stains, and other near impossible stains most often come out with little rubbing. I never use abrasives.
