No It would not be a fair price. 300 to 500 would be about right. I just did one on my Volvo Duoprop myself. Bearing was 50$, and I have an alignment bar and bearing driver. Call around for a estimate.

^^ what Dave said^^ I'm thinking they want to replace everything, bellow's,shift cable,u-joints. Just a gimble bearing is the easiest part of that job.

1987 Volvo Pentas don't have gimbal bearings. What exactly do you think they are changing?

I don't know where you live but it seems really high to me. I had a mechanic change the gimbal, all bellows, lower shift cable and impeller in April for $519.68.

Re: Gimble bearing

As stated first by bruceb58 and again by Fun Times, that outdrive, who's model has gone unmentioned by the OP, doesn't have a gimble bearing. So the job that all you Merc and SX style outdrive guys are talking about is wrong! depending on the model outdrive, it may be required to pull the motor to do this repair, adding a fair amount of labor, depending on what type of boat it is.

So the correct answer is "we need more info."

Welcome back to iboats, btw, 2nd post in 4 years.:)

The boat is not more info. Boats and engine/drive packages are separate and not related. So all we still know is 87 8cyl. Drive model or serial number is what captmello is asking for.

Re: Gimble bearing

Since you likely have a 270 drive, the labor sounds about right since the engine has to come out.

If this tech is any good don't let him get away. That is dirt cheap considering the parts are around $300.

Access can drive up costs. Sometimes the shops have to go to the circus and hire a contortionist. They don't contort cheap yanno.

Lots of work in that job.
The revised price is good.
You should look into replacing the u-joints too?
