i needed to go get more resin so i went to a marine store to check prices compared to on-line.

Now, speaking to the parts guys and tech's that work marine for a living. Full service marine store.

I was discussing the resin and glassing the deck and what a mess the first part was. now i was buying $30 worth of matt, in hand. they talked me out of neding glass for the deck. all i need is the resin/poly that had the right amount of hardner for this size resin. it was $16...i told them about the cracking issues and what the general rule is here.....yes, it will crack, but it will take a long time, not worth adding the glass compared to how long it will take to crack away, especially if painting afterwards. which is the plan.

i'm going with no glass and the material i put on today looks awsome and really soaked into the ply. they even recommended PT ply

so i put the glass back on the shelf and saved the 30 to go towards nice interlux bottom paint.

what do you think of my choice or wil i know for myself next year when i need to re-do the deck?

thanks for opinions.

They gave you terrible advice. Go someplace else and get the glass you wanted in the beginning.

If your going to trailer your boat and not let it sit in the water for more than two days, you can use topside paint for the bottom.

resin by itself is weak....it will crack.....and you will have water intrusion .....over 30 bux worth of glass.

did you have any resin left over in the bucket?.....did it cure?.....see how easy it is to break that thin film of resin?????.....that is what is on your deck.....and thats how brittle it is.

they gave you bad advice.

I agree with everybody else you can actually go look through Ooop's build thread and he shows in his thread just how strong resin is without any glass to help support it .I have read his thread from beginning to end and recomend it to anybody doing any glass work its not a light read but its worth your time to read.

Crack, Water intrusion, Weak, Bad Advice,.....

Not any conditions i want on a boat i plan to keep for a while, that was the whole reason behind a re-furb.

Just put schedule back some time, and wallet.

Will be glassing ALL ply that goes on deck.

thanks again

those guys at the marine store were just talking about themselves and how they want to work, lazy, they prefer to just slap a coat of resin on and not do the work. Thats why they're stuck where they are.

what about the idea of using PT ply??? If your going to cover it with glass and resin it seems like a waste.

Re: Glassing dilema on deck.

you need exterior grade pt, glassed and resined. Then sand smooth and paint or finish to suit.
