Also got some Maguires wax, was gonna get 3m but I used Maguires on a jeep once and it worked better than 3m,pretty odd, maybe the 3m was old:D

I personally prefer to use only fiberglass products with fiberglass and would avoid any use of Plastic Automotive filler on a boat...the one exception I can think of, is to use the hairy 'Bondo" that is made for marine use, but this stuff is too expensive for my taste and I can make it the way I want using a combination of micro-ballons, cabosil, milled fibers and resin...with a combination of the above, you can whip up much better, stronger and cheaper gap fillers...

Like I said, 'Bondo' does tend to absorb water and if it is too thick, could begin to delaminate from the underlying fiberglass, especially in the environment the boat is subjected to...vibration at speed and the constant exposure to moisture...However, if you use it just as a pinhole filler, it should work out just fine...

You need to post more information unless I'm missing something? You are more likely to get good answers if you provide detailed info and photos. What is it you have just glassed in?! I can understand being in the middle of a job and wanting information fast so you can get on with it though!

I use a random orbital sander after the glass has cured for smoothing things before painting. Grit size will depend on what it is that needs painting, what product you're using to paint with and how nice you need the finish to be. You can make a fairing filler from resin, cabosil and glass bubbles for any areas that need it before painting as well.

Re: Glasstream boat project

Thanks J, I've been posting pics on what I'm doing, and showed the pieces I fiberglassed before installation, tomorrow I've got ALOT of pics and info to put on here and I did not have an orbital sander but happened to find some 36 grit (about five sheets) and got to work ,man I'll tell you that wet sanding makes it a WHOLE lot easier ,I found out that the main layer of paint is a dull black and I said to myself "hay I bet I've got some to match that, and weirdly it matched it EXACTLY! But anyway I'm gonna order some metal flake and get some more clear coat and a spray gun:) well that's all for now, till tomorrow:D

Tomorrow in gonna start looking into the transom and stringers and I'm really hoping that they are good, but I have lately been noticing the transom flexes out when ever it's on the bottoming out of the transom saver,Yep :D

Well if it flexes even just a little bit, then you WILL have to replace it. If the transom is bad...There's a 99.9999999999999999% probability that the stringers will be bad to. but hey...I've been wrong before!!!!! Just ask my Wife:D

Yeah WOG, I thought that for sure it was rotten too, but after a good inspection I discovered that my transom wood is still looking brand new after all those years, and that the previous owner apparently left the bolts a little LOOSE!!!:mad-new:so I tightened them up good and put jam nuts on it just for safety:D

I can't wait to see how you are going to refinish this project with the metal flake colors and such. If you pull this off sucessfully, my hat's off to you. I've been wondering how anybody can duplicate metal flake finishes on boats for a loooonnnnggggg time... Post your efforts, I'll be watching... Good luck on your $20 dollar boat. You can never go wrong with that purchase price though...
