Well, I'm about 500 miles from the gulf, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Glob of grease

is there a grease fitting for that joint? Looks like someone just went a little nuts with the grease gun, possibly pushing a seal out of position...

Yeah there is a grease zerk on the outside of the housing. I didn't know if the grease is supposed to be contained in a seal, or if it's designed to just squirt out on to the joint.

There is an o ring on the bottom side, but I don't think there is anything on the top side.

Re: Glob of grease

There are two bearing surfaces on the gimbal ring upper swivel pin (which has a grease channel in the middle), one below and one above the steering arm. When you grease the pin (fitting on upper gimbal housing) the grease goes in through a hole in the lower surface and up the channel to the upper. Excess grease squeezes down and out, past the crummy little seal there. Kind of long winded way to say you are fine, just keep it greased :D.

Re: Glob of grease

Alright, thanks. On the things I usually grease, when there is piled up grease, there is a blown out seal. This is the first time I've had the gimbal housing off the boat, so I wasn't sure if the grease was meant to be contained within a seal of some kind. I'll just clean up the mess and go a little easier on the grease than the last guy.
