You know Tree, We have one energy advantage over the rest of the world and it's coal. Why would we want to do what this Yahoo, (with "good credentials" of course), wants, (bulldoze the energy plants)? JR

Re: Global chillin update

TXU, the largest energy provider in Texas, agreed to be bought out in the largest private equity deal in history....
$45 billion....
The buyers promised environmental groups that they would shelve plans for a bunch of coal fired plants.....
Read more about it in the business section of the Seattle Times.........;)

Hello Treedancer. Thanks for the link but it required me to become a member to view. Otherwise, I would read it. Can you post it or is it too long. I did visit the Columbia website and see that AI is associated with Columbia on the movement.

Can we get a GW expert in here to give us a forecast? Or,....did Global warming fly south fer the winter?

This is getting serious, check this report out. This guy has some good credentials.

Top Scientist Seeks Halt on Coal Plants

<<WASHINGTON (AP) -- One of the world's top scientists on global warming called for the United States to stop building coal-fired power plants and eventually bulldoze older generators that don't capture and bury greenhouse gases.>>

<<In prepared remarks to be delivered at the National Press Club Monday afternoon, NASA scientist James Hansen, who has been one of the earliest top researchers to warn the world about global warming, will call for a moratorium on building new coal-fired power plants.>>

<<Coal provides about half of the United States' electricity, according to the Department of Energy.>>

Sure, let's just do what every Left wing whaco religio-environmentalist suggest. Coal powered generating plants now and all the evil hydro-electric plants tomorrow.

This guy along with Algore and we will be living back in the caves before you know it.

Relax Haut, most of us already knew he would win. Rush has been keeping us up to date. He predicted it just last week when he read from an article about Al lobbying with Hollywood and the Oscar folks.

Top Scientist Seeks Halt on Coal Plants

WASHINGTON (AP) -- One of the world's top scientists on global warming called for the United States to stop building coal-fired power plants and eventually bulldoze older generators that don't capture and bury greenhouse gases.
But 159 coal-fired power plants are scheduled to be built in the next decade or so, generating enough power for about 96 million homes, according to a study last month by the U.S. Department of Energy.
Burning coal is one of the major sources of carbon dioxide, the chief greenhouse gas causing global warming.
In prepared remarks to be delivered at the National Press Club Monday afternoon, NASA scientist James Hansen, who has been one of the earliest top researchers to warn the world about global warming, will call for a moratorium on building new coal-fired power plants.
Hansen's call dovetails with an edict by the private equity group buying TXU, a massive Texas-based utility. The equity group, led by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and Texas Pacific Group, agreed to stop plans to build eight new coal-fired power plants, not to propose new coal-fired plants outside Texas and to support mandatory national caps on emissions linked to global warming.
Hansen's presentation to the press club says all coal-fired power plants that do not capture and bury carbon dioxide ''must eventually be bulldozed (before mid-century).''
The director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, who was speaking as a private citizen, said Congress should adopt these coal cuts and if not, ''citizens must accomplish this.'' He said increased efficiency can make up for the cutbacks in coal.
Coal provides about half of the United States' electricity, according to the Department of Energy.
Hansen's call ''ought to be vetted by those who have an understanding of the energy demands placed on the U.S. economy,'' said National Mining Association spokesman Luke Popovich. ''When seen in light of those demands, then statements like that will appear unreasonable, to put it charitably.'

Hey Omer read the whole article, and put it into the proper context, especially the part that I have in bold.( and eventually bulldoze older generators that don't capture and bury greenhouse gases.)

In anticipation of anyone that is getting ready to say it can’t be done here is a snip from an article that shows that the Norwegians have been doing it since 1996.

<<Three large-scale carbon storage, or sequestration, projects are testing ways to bury carbon dioxide effectively. The world's oldest carbon-sequestration experiment began in the North Sea oil fields in 1996. Statoil, the Norwegian national oil company, extracts carbon dioxide from natural gas and pumps 2,800 tons of it every day 3,000 feet below the North Sea floor, trapping it in sandstone. A 250-foot-thick layer of shale covers the entire sandstone formation, and it seems to be leakproof. Statoil estimates that all the carbon dioxide emissions from every power plant in Europe for the next 600 years could be stored in the formation.>>here is the link.

Tree, seems to be leak proof does not seem to be a clear Scientific Resolve IMO. But, if you convince enough people you might get a consensus on that theory.

Tree, I intentionally did that for the effect, (just like Al does). I, for one: am all for making coal cleaner and better for the environment. Norway and other small countries can and do have some interesting approaches to power generation. I just hate to drink all the Lib Kool Aid without thinking and testing things. There are those out there, (I'm not taking a shot at you: Tree), like Algore or Babs S. who are such patently false, (like that one BB?) hipocrites they want us to do as they say not as they do. Coal is a real advantage for America, and it is also economically feasable with existing proceedures. I and many other Cornservatives, (sorry Tree: Conservatives), are very weary of 'do good Libs' who want to tax and regulate everything us poor slobs do but use energy without a second thought. They also seem to dislike genuine American advantages. Respectfully, JR

I hate to admit it but: me Bro may have a real point here. Algore, could possibly win the big one if he played it just right, n' I think he may be lacking a full deck or may not have the elevator visiting the top floor. That said: I rather have ol' Hill then Algore who really scares me. At least Hill's record n' policy as a Senator is logical. Al is just plain: NUTS! JR

Hmmmmm, Sound suspicious ta me. Last I heard there was lots o' natural gas, (not Rubber's gas), n' awl 'round those parts. N' if the new owners agree ta kill the coal fired plants why would ya reach such a cornclusion? JR

Don't worry, Hansen is alway's trotted out when a liberal needs a position statement. Next to ALGORE, he is the next in line for the chicken little award. I don't even follow this garbage and I have heard of this guy.

Look at this guys credentials................ Wasn't the unibomber a college professor?

Current conditions, 16" of snow in the past 48 hrs and 21 degrees. I just feel warmer... 8)

Re: Global chillin update

We may trot him out, but I believe that he has better credentials then the type of “experts” that the conservatives trot out, such as “Dennis Avery,” Avery served as a senior agricultural analyst for the US Department of State for between 1980 and 1988 under the Reagan administration, "where he was responsible for assessing the foreign-policy implications of food and farming developments worldwide.

Avery studied agricultural economics at Michigan State University and the University of Wisconsin. I wonder how that makes him an expert on global warming? Yet he is making the rounds presenting him self as an authority on global warming, and in the meantime humping his book that he just happened to Wright called” Unstoppable Global Warming”

He also claims that organic food is more dangerous to eat than food produced using chemical pesticides. So feel free to drench your salad with pesticides with the knowledge that Mr. Avery assures you that it will do you any harm.:%
