The notion that oil companies control the price of crude, and therefore gas, is a myth.

So is the notion that suburban moms driving suburbans are affecting the price of gas.

I understand that people are angry, and that shallow minded people "need" someone to blame and to hate. That is what got Germany in a whole bunch of trouble just a couple of generations ago.

The oil companys didn't cause this and there is nothing they can do about it. Same with the Federal Government, suburban soccer moms and all the other groups that are getting blamed and bashed.

The thing to do that will make your life easier is to adapt to the reality of it and quit looking for boogy men to lynch. That would be doing something about it.

Let me rephrase it then. Why is it any of your business what those 10 soccer mom's/cubical jockeys choose to drive? Or do you think that there should be some sort of qualification process before you can buy a vehicle?

I don't think anyone is saying we should ask people to qualify for a vehicle. I think more than that, people are upset about the fact that GM should have seen this coming down the pike and could have made some serious changes in how things are marketed and what they were producing. The H2 was marketed as a status symbol. One of the ways they marketed it was to claim that women could feel more powerful by commuting in one. I think that's irresponsible. Now they're stuck with their bad decision.

How is that any of my business? When a major vehicle manufacturer goes into the toilet for doing something that people have been telling them for years is stupid, it's my business. The economy is my business. The future of this country is my business.

It's also my business because I'm tired of being a responsible American when so many people around me don't give a crap. I spend within my means. I don't have any credit card debt. I conserve fuel. And I look around and see that the little bit that I'm doing doesn't amount to squat when compared to the extreme irresponsibility of people around me.

In short, it's every American's business to watch what other Americans are doing and figure out whether it's good for the country. A vehicle that very predictably causes a manufacturer to go into the toilet is not good for the country.

What an absolutely terrifying statement!! It is a direct contradiction of Freedom and Liberty for which so many Americans have died.

I might agree with "It is every American's business do decide whether what he is doing is good for the country." What others are doing is none of your business or mine.

I think that's another key point. What we're seeing is the market shift from popularity to practicality...

Sounds like you'd like my neighbor. He burns styrofoam and OSB in a burn barrel while my son is out playing in the yard.

I think you'd also like my other neighbor. He sets up his shotgun targets so that they're between his gun and my house.

Let's not forget my other neighbor who lets his mentally deranged dog loose all day long to terrorize smaller animals and children.

Your freedom ends when it infringes on my freedom. In this case, irresponsible attitudes from car manufacturers have had a devastating effect on American jobs and on our ability to be competitive in the long-term world-wide vehicle market. They're free to do that, yes. I'm not talking about taking away an American business' right to be stupid. However, by the same token, I'm also free to criticize them in a public forum while they're doing it, and I'm free to say "I told you so" when it turns out I was right. Been doing so for years. That's part of the free exchange of ideas, and that's what America is all about.

You can watch what's happening around you and question it, or you can sit back and think there's nothing you can do about it. I prefer the former.

Their goes the economy!makes alot of sense creating military conflicts in other parts of the world,and getting the rest of the world pissed off at the US.Money would have been better spent on the US economy,than pissing away in military conflicts.What a great lead down a road to ruins.

Why do people think the maunfacutrers should have seen this comming? They are not the ones that raised fuel prices. Not one of us is psychic, but we all know nothing lasts forever... Was GM just suppose to assume the end is near and produce a compact car then sit on it untill gas went up and someone wanted to buy it? Probably not.

They produced what we wanted at the time. Now they are trying to adapt to our new desires. They cant help the fact that vehices we bought back then arent what we want now. Go dig in your closet and find some out dated clothes, then complain to the manufaturer that they should have seen the end of the style comming and you want a refund. Ridiculous.

And status symbol vehicles? So what. If thats what they were, then thats what they were. Nobody ever sold a Hummer because it was a great daily commuter. Porches dont make good family sedans. But if you wanted one and used it as such then you did so at your own risk. There is no reason to blame the industry.

Yesterday I was out for a leisure drive in my quadcab and I noticed this little Prius painted baby-poop-yellow pulling out of the local coffee-snobbery shop. I dropped the shifter in to second as I went by and the rpm's jumped up to around 3500. The exhaust was loud and strong and Mr Fancy Pants nearly spilled his half-caf-skinny-soy-chi-latte in his lap. Of course, I continued on at full throttle to the red light, only using the brakes at the last second.

When he got up to me, he rolled his window down to say something to me and I could just barely smell his granola breath over the heavy aroma of fuel blowing out my exhaust. "You know if you were smart, you would get something a little better on mileage," Mr Fancy Pants declared.

I immediately responded with "you know if you were smart, you would get a better job so you could afford to drive a bigger car."

The call-girl in the seat next to him started in as well, "if you weren't wasting all your money on gas you could afford...."

I cut her off to say, "I could afford what? A better looking street walker than Mr Fancy Pants here?"

Mr Fancy Pants was enraged! "That's my wife you're talking to!"

"I guess you got her working the corner to afford more gas," I retorted.

As the light turned green, he floored his gas pedal in fury. It made this little squeal that sounded like a raped chihuahua. Apparently, he hadn't noticed the officer waiting across the street. I later learned that he got a ticket for drag racing. Just think of all the gas he could have bought for the cost of that ticket?
