Greetings, I've got a rear suspension question for you guys.

I'm going to be towing a ~2000 lb trailer/boat package with an older Jeep XJ Cherokee, 4.0 with AW4 auto, it will have a transmission cooler added when I do the hitch. It's got OEM leaf springs in it, which are fine. It still rides at stock height both front and rear. Shocks are new, but I'm thinking about throwing some Monroe Sensa Tracs in to replace the stock replacements. These are the coil over shocks made for load leveling. I don't want to lift the jeep at all, and I'm thinking I can maintain stock height while not sagging too badly with the tongue weighed down (175 lbs when parked).

So I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience with these, good or bad. Thanks!

Good point, Bondo. Hard sayin' not knowin' at this point, as I haven't even put the hitch on yet. Premature post, perhaps...I'll dig this back up in a couple of weeks. Cheers.

Find a person that weighs about 175 lbs and have them stand on the bumper and measure how much it drops. Shouldn't be much.

You want some sag anyways. Otherwise, your ride when you're not towing the boat will be really, really harsh.

Thanks for the input, man. And, yeah, I agree. Once you start getting into HD leafs, you have to get a spacer for the front strut so you're not raked when not under load. Then you've got a lifted Jeep that sucks for everything on pavement. Trying to keep it simple here...hopefully that'll mean a hitch and wiring :)

I didn't need 'em on either of my Cherokees, including when towing a 3000 pounder.

.

I'm not a fan of Monroe shocks. They work "on average" but they don't last very long. If I bought shocks for towing, I'd investigate the Bilstein shocks brand. I hear Bilstein shocks have much higher quality - compared to Monroe brand.

If rear of Jeep goes down too much after trailer is connected and rear cargo is added, then investigate Timbren SES units. I had Timbren SES in my previous Tow Vehicle (that has leaf springs) and I also have Timbren SES units within my current Tow Vehicle (that uses Coil springs). They work great - for my towing & rear cargo needs. And, don't change empty load ride comfort either. Timbren SES units might work for your Jeep as well. re: Timbren Kits, Timbren Bump Stop Springs, Rubber SES Load Booster

I had a cherokee that the p/o had installed air shocks on the rear..... IF you do discover that it sags more than you like You could add em and just air up when towing
