I just LOVE wasting money, At this point I think it would have probably been better if I just didn't paint anything. WTF ::mad::facepalm:

On a side note, I obviously seem to have bought the wrong bottom paint too?? Funny I didn't repaint this winter and last season it was fine..

I guess that I am wondering how you are blaming the paint?

Even the hydraulic lines are encrusted...did you paint them also?

You have a nasty problem...but your paint isn't it.

What could it be then? I did paint the hydraulic lines...

From my questions you can guess I haven't done much salt water boating. Are those barnacles? And how long did it take? Wish I had an answer for you.

Yup, good old west marine outdrive paint after sanding and priming it ... damn I'm glad I spent so much time on it!

Will a 2500 PSI pressure washer take care of this?

I had to do the same thing with my outdrive. I used a paint scraper, and it didn't take long at all. Only down side was it left the rings of the barnacles, which I'll be attacking (again with a paint scraper) now that the boat is out of the water.

I wouldn't use a pressure washer myself. They can cause more damage than good. The bulk of the barnacles will come off relatively easily with a scraper, just remember to wear good gloves, or you'll cut the heck out of your hands. Once the 'meat' of the barnacle is off, then it's just some patience to get the rings off. I already got the rings off my unpainted transom, and it was easy. Wiped it with full strength CLR on a sponge, let it sit a few seconds, then scraped. The only difference should be that the outdrive isn't a flat surface that would allow for long scrapes. I also did this on my aluminum dock ladder, and it was just as easy.

It's a good idea once a month or so, to throw on a PFD and get in the water with a plastic scraper and a scotchbrite pad. I find that stuff grows on my outdrive and tabs much more readily than on the hull. I'm surprised that you didn't notice a decrease in performance from the growth.

In my (limited) experience, seems that most people slap on a fresh coat of bottom paint every season, too.

No paint will do you any good. Unfortunately, you have one of the extremely rare "Chia-Drives". Once you put it in the water, there's nothing you can do to stop it .....

A paint scraper or putty knife will cut through that fairly quickly. Some sandpaper afterwards should clean it right up. Make sure you hit the water pickups very carefully. Part of this is the paint. Also, you really gotta take a swim with a mask, snorkle and a green scrub pad once a week and go over the entire drive. Inspect the pickups and make sure they are clean and clear. If yo udo it once a week, it will take maybe 5 minutes. I also go around the hull and clean the scum line and sides of the hull by teh chines. Ablative paint only works via friction and once the boat is on plane, the sides of the chines are out of the water. Keeping on it once a week will prevent this from occurring as well.

lol...um....possibly the water...

I mean seriously that is some hell of some marine growth, just nasty water in general. I'd be scared to even jump in that water for fear barnacles might start growing on my wanker.

I thought the water down here in charleston was bad enough as I had staining on my hull after only a week of sitting in the water. thats only two months of growth? I'm surprised all the boats in that harbor arent cemented to the riverbed with barnacle growth.

mental note to self, never leave a boat in the water even overnight in long island sound.

haha, well, My slip is in the end of the harbor, I guess there's not much actual movement of water around there....I would NEVER swim in there either.

What's really amazing is that they grow on anything, plastic, metal, even PAINT lol. See my depth finder below?

Anyway, after a 45 min power wash here's the results, time for some breakfast, a shower and then I guess I'm off to west marine to get ripped off again on some real bottom paint...hope to be in the water tomorrow morning...

I dont think anything short of just not leaving it in the water over a week will prevent that growth from re-occuring. did you get all the funk out of the water intakes properly? it looked like the stuff was growing all up in that area and could possibly cause a flow restriction. I'd almost pull the foot to look inside there better to see if its not a bivwack (sp?) of algae/plant growth...

The interesting part is I take the boat out like 3 or 4 times a week!

Not gonna bother with taking off the foot just yet, temps have been fine all season..

I boat in the Chesapeake which isn't quite as salty, but we still have barnacle issues. Trilux 33 in the can has worked well for me. My bottom paint is Petit (I think it was their "Vivid" line...or maybe it was Horizon?). It was the one hard antifoul available in white that I could find. It has worked great so far.
