Okay so i have a s-10 blazer 4-door with a 4.3 liter v6 motor which im am sure will pull my 15ft maxum boat just fine. I pulled it home with a small liter v6 ford explorer & it pulled great. So i was looking at my tires cause i have my blazer 5/6 dropped on 20 inch rims & the the rear end is stiff so i know the suspension can deal with the load but the low profile tires say 750lbs/1500lbs max weight. I assume thats per tire but i dont know the weight of my vehicle or boat with trailer. Does anyone else tow with low pro tires? The tire size is 255/35/20. Any help here guys?

Re: Got a tire rating question bout towing boat

15 foot boat shouldn't put more than 100-150lbs of tounge weight on the rear of your truck. My full sized Ram crewcab weighs about 5400lbs, so there is no way that an S10 is anywhere near the 6K capacity of those tires.

Bigger concern would be damaging those tires and wheels on concrete strip launches.

Your Blazer weighs 4200#, plus gear, passengers, and fuel.

Do your tires say "750lbs/1500lbs" ?

Or do they say 750kg/1500lbs ?

More than likely

One thing to remember though, that 1500lb rating is at the max inflation pressure.

At any rate, the load on the tires from that boat and trailer is about the same as 4 bags of softener salt, or 1 medium weight mother in law.

Re: Got a tire rating question bout towing boat

I beleive the max psi is 35 for my tires, also while we're talikng about it the tires on my trailer look really slack. I stopped & checked them the day i bought the boat but both of them had around 34 psi in them. I cant find anything on them that tells me the psi rating & with them looking so slack would that be a sign they need replacing?

There should be a psi and load rating on the tire - it will most likely be either 50 or 65 depending on the type of tire. What is the brand and size of the tire?

Kind of an odd size. A trailer tire size would commonly be 175/80/13

Yea thats what i was kind of thinking cause i was online pricing replacement rims/ tires & could only fine 175/80/13. Thats what the tires say though in big numbers on the side. The way it looks if i replace them im going to have to go back with a 80 sidewall.

Okay so just took a look at the tires & they are Douglas Xtra-Trac 175/70/13
max 35 psi
they look like they would be riding on part of the sidewall. Ill have to get a pic

don't make the mistake I did! I put reg. tires under my cuddy 1901. The sidewalls were not stiff enough. Had to replace them with the trailer tires. Just glad nothing happened. One of the reasons they call me the Finnish genius. Ken

Re: Got a tire rating question bout towing boat

Oh wow thx for the tip Ken but im def going back with trailer tires, im just wondering why these look the way they do. Like they are under inflated but the psi checks out in them. They are def trailer tires & dont look bad as far as dry rotted or cracked, just dirty. Can someone explain what would cause these tires to give in the way they are? Maybe its normal i just know on my last boat trailer the tires never looked low on air the way these do.

Those are just really cheap car tires made for Walmart. I'd replace them with a real trailer tire.

I'm pretty sure the "P" in P175 means passenger (car), which means they aren't trailer tires at all, which explains the sagging sidewalls. I lighter boat would be okay, but it looks like you are loading those things pretty heavily.

Re: Got a tire rating question bout towing boat

Radial tires always look like they're flat. That's because the sidewalls are free to flex instead of binding like bias ply sidewalls. The tracking and side force properties are mostly granted by the relatively stiff belts under the tread.

I run good quality passenger radials on my boat trailer. They look a little flat. They track and handle well at any speed I've traveled, never over 80 mph. They were recommended by the best tire man in the county.

Re: Got a tire rating question bout towing boat

So J what do you recommend me do here? The tread on the tires is good, hasnt seen alot of towing. It would be ashame to get rid of a perfectly good set of tires if its okay to use them on my trailer. Trailer tires or keep what ive got?
